Dd just almost choked on an Upsy Daisy teacup

I'm not sure which forum to post this in so sorry if I chose the wrong place.

The teaset was free with an In The Night Garden magazine. Dd is 18mo and I thought had grown out of choking hazard territory but seemingly not.

She just managed to fit the whole teacup in her mouth and breathed in the air that was trapped inside, making a seal around the rim of the teacup, if you know what I mean.

She made what I thought was a couple of weird coughing noises and then came over to me gagging on it. Luckily I managed to get my little finger behind it and break the suction but it was very scary and she was immediately sick all over the floor.

I'm just so pleased I was right there. I managed to calm her down and get her into clean clothes before I burst into tears.

Needless to say I have thrown the teacups straight in the bin and I would strongly urge anyone else to do the same.

Have you contacted the publishers? I see their target market is 18 months to 3 years so they should be taking extra care with free gifts that may be choke hazards.

ellesabe · 26/05/2012 18:42

I haven't done anything about it yet but yes it does say on the magazine that the toy is suitable from 18 months.

Whenever we've had that magazine the blurb on the cardboard backing to the toy has said its not suitable for under 3's. Which is ridiculous on that magazine.

So glad your DD is ok.

I just shuddered reading that ellesabe. I'm so glad your DD is ok.

Definitely write or phone and tell the company that do the magazine. I don't think the magazine and the toy they supply should be suitable for different age ranges. Who is going to buy an 18-36mo mag and then give the toy on it to a 3+?

The toys free with magazines will be very cheaply produced and so won't have gone through the testing required for them to be certified as suitable for under 3s, hence the 3+ label, which all toys must carry unless they've been tested.

Some toys with a 3+ label will be perfectly safe for under 3s but just not tested, whereas others aren't suitable. Sounds like this could be the case here.

I agree you should write and inform them of this, they might pick their "free gifts" better in the future.

The label didn't say 3+...it said 'suitable from 18 months'!
