Toy kitchen accessories - wooden, enamel, plastic or metal?

We're planning on buying DS a wooden toy kitchen but now I can't decide which type of pots/pans/utensils to go for.

cheap quiet robust plastic ones like this

noisy cheap metal ones like this

Nice expensive wooden ones like this

Even more expensive nicer enamel ones like this

Too much choice! Any opinions on what a lively 2 year old boy would prefer? Will the noise of metal ones drive me bonkers? Which would be the most robust?

We got my ds a wooden kitchen and wooden utensils as I love wooden toys. However, although they looked lovely on his birthday, I now wish I'd gone for plastic ones that I could easily wash, and were cheap to replace. His kitchen was in his play house and got ruined when the roof sprung a leak...he doesnt seem to mind, but its all warped and peeling now!!

Being a typical boy he uses his cooking pans and utensils to mix mud pies, sand and water...in reflection plastic would probably have been a much better bet.

Thanks Roo83. What a shame about your DS's kitchen.

Cheers for the tip to get pans that are easily washable!

I would second the plastic ones DG - DS1 has plastic and metal, but the plastic ones are so much easier to clean and look after (and cheap!) and don't hurt so much when he hits his brother with them Grin!

You know my love of all things wooden when it comes to toys, but this would be where I make an exception Smile.

Thanks KnittingisbetterthanTherapy I do like the enamel ones, but am erring towards the plastic ones now. They sound a lot safer. It also fits in with my slight obsession of things that match as DS already has the spotty teaset that matches those particular plastic pots Grin

Like the new name btw!

My dds wooden kitchen fell apart after a while.I had to bin it, it cost over 100pounds.It was too dangerous.tiny bolts kept loosening everytime door was opened and closed no matter how much i tightend them and eventually they came loose and fell off.never again.i really would suggest plastic

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 20/09/2010 13:13

Sorry to hear that Daisy. Sounds really shoddy! We've actually already bought the wooden kitchen, it was more the utensils I was deliberating over but I'll definitely keep an eye on the screws and bolts on it - it'll go straight back if it starts falling apart!

It was well known wooden toy company.yeah defently keep an eye out.once the bolts come off the screws do too.it looked nice though, was upset that i had to bin it.but i couldnt botherd to find out what type of bolts and screws it needed to repair it.Too many dif types of screws and bolts

if you buy a wooden one you must expect chips in paint and so on but at the end of the day you have a much higher quality product.

i have never had any problems with mine and im happy i choose a wooden one instead of a takky plastic one. its alot softer to touch and alot nicer to look at.

DS has a lovely wooden one from Letterbox.

He also has lots of wooden play food and a rather fetching mini cake stand, which I covet.

He loves them and so far they have lasted really well.
