Hi there. I'd like to buy my nearly four year old daughter a bike but am slightly bewildered by the options. Can she have a real bike at this age rather than trike? But with stabilisers? And what is a good make? Thanks a lot for help!

Hi there - your four year old can definately have a bicycle rather than a trike - they are easier to pedal for a start (& less back-breaking for you to push).

Most small bikes come with stabilisers that can be removed once she has the hang of cycling / steering - don't leave it too long to remove them as once she's over 5 she'll start to consider what happens when they are removed & it can be difficult to get their confidence up. DD1 was given her first bike by granny at 3 & had her stabilisers taken off at 3.5 - though she does cycle most days as her dad cycles to work & she wanted to copy him.

Halfords or your local bike shop will have a good range of bikes but new ones are expensive. Tesco sometimes have some. But I would advise tryiing your local tip first - DD1 first two bikes came from there or Ebay - they often go for as little as £5 on buyer collect. Just check for rust & give everything a good oil since a stiff bike will be very difficult to ride.
