Should King Charles stump up?

All this talk of reparations from one of the world’s richest men!!!! I don’t think the British taxpayer should stump up, but I do think the King could sell a palace and fund permanently a huge amazing high school for the Caribbean….thoughts?

Have the governments of African nations, those selling people from their own countries paid yet?

Great moral thought leadership there 👏

@faferandom “All this talk of reparations from one of the world’s richest men”

do you mean King Charles? I can’t find any reference to him talking about reparations. Apart from anything else, I don’t think he would take the risk.

Bandsis · Today 17:31

Can you show me the quotes of all this "talk of reparations". As far as I can see the King has talked of nothing of the sort.

AlexandraCarrington · Today 17:31

I’m suggest that our King might like to - himself.

And I pointed out that the Prime Minister has made it clear that it is a matter for the government. Are you suggesting that the King should ignore his Prime Minister?

No you’re right. He sort of fluttered around it.

You mean he carefully avoided saying it at all?

No I’m not. But you’ve got to admit, that’s pretty handy for him isn’t it? BTW other than Norway, our king enjoys some of the biggest tax exemptions of all the royal families in Europe.

Errr I think you’ll find that others have coughed up and apologised - Netherlands and Germany. I’m suggest that our King might like to - himself.

The King doesn't own any palaces.

We weren’t the only country to be involved.

Yes. What are the Americans, the French, the Spanish, the Portuguese and the Arabs going to do? Some of them were engaged in slavery and the slave trade long after it had been made illegal for Britons to participate in it.

And the African nations that rounded up the Africans who were sold into slavery.

Oh but only the ENGLISH are bad. 🙄

Cardhey · Today 17:55

No one should be paying. It’s ridiculous. Let’s cease all foreign aid to them now.

ToadRage · Today 17:56

It is ridiculous. No one alive today is old enough to remember either being or owning a slave. Get the fuck over it.

This. ^ And no-one alive today was affected by it, so they need to stop asking for money from us.

Perhaps you should do more research on the Slavery issue.

Absolutely.

Take a holiday to Antigua and publicly pipe that POV - see how popular you are!

That's not what it's about. It's about the disadvantages that dependents face becuase of slavery. Deep-seated economic, physical and mental health, and social impacts. Reparations are thoroughly impractical, but to say that decendents of slaves are unaffected by slavery is astonishingly ignorant.

Why on earth would I do that? What an odd suggestion.

BatchCookBabe · Today 18:03

@faferandom Not everyone is going to agree with you, you do get that do you not?

That happens sometimes, people disagree on things... And no amount of badgering and sarcastic comments will change someone's minds, and their beliefs.

HTH.

This. We weren't the only people to be involved in this, and I am sick of the whole vibe suggesting we were. No-one EVER gets any shade thrown on them except the ENGLISH!

Also, no-one alive today is responsible for what happened many years ago. No-one should be paying anyone. No reparations are needed, and it's coming across as rather grabby. (Especially when you take into account the fact that all the people holding their hands out were not affected by what happened 200+ years ago.)

Yep, I'm fucking sick of it...

is it? If you stand by your view why not openly share it to the people who feel most impacted?
