You get the same salary you are on now, but you can do anything creative, what would you pick?

I would pick writing teen fiction books, it's my dream career, I've just started to write a book

I would be paid to make up paint colour names. Whoever made up Elephant's Breath and Mouse's Back is a genius but it's a rich seam to be tapped and I would enjoy it very much... 'Stoat's Toe Beige'... 'Bovril Whisper Brown' etc etc.

In fact, should Mumsnet ever launch a paint brand I'm throwing my hat in the ring now with 'Umber Chicken For A Family of Eight', 'Loo Brush Anger Yellow' and, simply, 'Unreasonable Blue'.

If not that then, like you, OP, writing children's books. Slightly creepy ones. With wolves. I'd like to be a Joan Aiken for the 21st century.

@HebeMumsnet I'm howling now 😂😂😂

I crochet and grow veg, but as a novice. I'd love to be paid for my granny square blankets and wonky veg.

I have no talents for it beyond the odd workshop I've attended but...pottery. Seems like a nice way to make a living. Also, going by how hard it is for me to buy anything in my favourite ceramicists "drop days", it appears to be a popular business.

The hobby I'd actually be most likely to turn into anything is baking. I get asked quite often to make cakes for family and friends, and I provide when I can. Although bread making is my real joy. Money is often offered but always declined as it turns it from something enjoyable to a task to be completed. I

I don't really have a business mind nor do I fancy spending all my weekends at rainy "makers markets"

PuffinIsle · 28/10/2026 12:57

I'm a really good baker and love to bake and decorate cakes. However the world and it's mother seems to do that these days, so not sure there'd be much point!

I would do just loads of different craft courses. Not have to settle on one thing but just keep learning new stuff.

rageagainstthemachine72 · 28/10/2026 13:03

Interior design. I have a flair for it, everyone says so

TheeNotoriousPIG · 28/10/2026 13:04

I would keep my options open by writing books, cooking, soapmaking, knitting and dressmaking (but I need to get better at the latter first).

SnowflakesandSlippers · 28/10/2026 13:07

I'd love to be a writer. I try in my spare time, but my job is so draining that I rarely have enough energy to even keep on top of the essentials at home.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/10/2026 14:29

Paint watercolours.

Wheniswinenight · 28/10/2026 14:35

I would love to be a prop buyer for tv shows. And set design. I think I’d be good at it.

Echobelly · 28/10/2026 14:47

Opera/classical music singing.

I had/ have a good enough voice to be professional (pro singers have been known to assume I'm also professional) and could have been good enough technically with the necessary practice. But I didn't want to go for it because I'm too thin skinned and the chances of making a career of it are so small. I love singing, but I also hate uncertainty and not having a fixed income!

ExquisiteDecoration · 28/10/2026 14:49

Making silver jewellery, I dabbled a bit years ago and loved it.

ToadRage · 28/10/2026 14:51

I wish I was fast enough and good enough and there was a credible market for my cross stitch creations.

bigsquid · 28/10/2026 15:11

I'd be a musical comedian

TheLastSilverSaint · 28/10/2026 15:34

Writing.

I work in communications and about 85% of my job is copywriting anyway, but I don't count that as creative writing. There's an element of creativity to it, but I obviously don't have any choice in the subject matter and I have to tailor my writing style to specific audiences, so there's little creative freedom.

I do a lot of creative writing in my spare time.

5289843DM · 28/10/2026 16:37

I already posted up thread, but ideally, I'd have a song or 2 which I get royalties from, so I don't have to continue working at all!

Nitgel · 28/10/2026 16:49

Modern art with a surreal bent.

Redheadedstepchild · 28/10/2026 18:51

I'd love to be a writer. I saw the BBC and Guardian articles about Helen Fielding promoting the, "Bridget Jones Award" a few days ago and nearly started a thread about it but in case anyone is interested and is eligible, I'll give the link to the entry requirements, prizes and other details at the end of this post.

It's for comic writing of 1000 words but absolutely no more. You have to be resident in a pretty narrow band of the Northern counties and be previously unpublished.

I can't enter because I currently live and have lived in the Filthy Abroads for over two decades despite being 50% Manchester/Lancashire by birth and 80% Lancashire by upbringing. The other 20% of my childhood was marred by being born on the Isle of Wight by accident and my parents being held hostage by the Suffolk branch of my mother's family for my toddler years.

New Writing North has other prizes for other genres too if you furtle the website. Anyway:
