I've "had a fall"

So, on the way to work today I fell over in the street. I'm wearing boots, so no laces to trip over. Pavement wasn't too bad - which is unusual for my town.

Cuts on hands and knees.

I lay on the ground for a bit then got up.

Fortunately there weren't many people around to see me :)

One pedestrian on the other side of the road had stopped, and waited for me to get up then we waved across the road etc.

Really of course, I fell over rather than had a fall - but is this the start..

I'm fine now - but it's not how you expect your day to go

How old are you OP?

I am quite clumsy so tripping over my own feat wouldn't be unheard of for me 🤣
I've been worse in pregnancy too.

However, appreciate as you get older it becomes more stressful as you can't bounce back up as easily!

Summerhillsquare · 25/10/2026 11:05

Could be. Depends on your age. Or could be a signal to do some balance based exercise. Start on one leg 😁 I used the bosu ball at the gym to improve my leg strength and balance as I became prone in menopause, and have sprained my ankles god knows how many times.

BertramsSister · 25/10/2026 11:09

But did you have a 'bit of a fall'? They are the ones you need to watch.

Sympathies though. It's not nice and does throw you off when that happens.

Time to consider strength and balance training? Hopefully you were not hurt.

topcat2014 · 25/10/2026 12:51

I'm not a natural for balance, to be fair. Never managed roller skates, skateboard or ice skating.

Might try some balance exercises!

My friend always tells me "we are old now" - I'm 55 but not taking this concept on board yet!

If people laugh you fell over if people look concerned you had a fall

Gobbledegoo · 25/10/2026 12:58

I've always fallen over: Crossed the road on my face at one time!

To help with your balance: Clean your teeth standing on one leg nearly touching the edge of the sink. Alternate the standing leg. Slowly over time move away from the sink until you can clean your teeth without leaning/touching the sink at all. Then improve by peeling veg/dusting/cleaning something when standing on one leg then the other leg.

55 isn’t old!
Do not go gentle into that good night !
sounds like some balancing exercises
cpuld help. I follow a few accounts in instagram aimed at middle aged women encouraging strength and balance.

Pilates, huge help, the physio praised my balance the other day on one leg as I was to hip exercises….preen. I’m 57.

TheSmallAssassin · 25/10/2026 13:14

I have been working on my balance since listening to Just One Thing, I have an electric toothbrush that buzzes every 30 seconds, so use that to time myself. I've recently started doing calf raises at the same time, as I have had a couple of tumbles in recent years, mostly while running, but a couple of times when walking. I need to pay attention and be more careful too, most of the times I've fallen over while walking I have been distracted, following directions on my phone, looking at something else, thinking about manoeuvring around people coming in the opposite direction, etc and the pavement/path has been a bit uneven. I'd like to work on my proprioception next!

I slipped this morning, I’m 57, but it was nothing to do with age, we have exposed floor boards and I was wearing some thick socks so it becomes slippy, I slipped down two steps, I tried to stop myself and couldn’t, did the whole comic thing of shuffling with both feet slipping and then went down, I didn’t hurt myself as I could brace for it, and have a lot of muscle, but it does give you a shock.

i felt quite shaken uo after, so you have my sympathy.

Have U had your eyes tested recently? I've had a few minor falls and turns out I have cataracts. It affects my perception of hazards and depth

😂😂

OrangeFlower14 · 25/10/2026 13:38

Do you know why you fell? Lots of wet leaves around and you never know what’s under them.

It is shocking. I hope you’re okay.

RumPidgeon · 25/10/2026 13:42

You had a fall and admit your balance is poor. I’d be making balance exercises and Pilates a priority. You’re far too young to be prone to falls. Are you overweight with poor knees/hips? I’d be concerned you’re brushing this off when it could be the foreshadowing of some underlying health issues.

Iinger · 25/10/2026 13:42

I fell in the shower last night, OP. Really hurt myself and ended up sitting on the shower floor with the water still pouring down into my face and not being sure how to get up without being able to shut off the water first, but the shower knob was way beyond my reach.

It very much felt like a “had a fall” situation, mainly because I felt quite hopeless and useless.

I’m 43 😭

Hope you’re ok after your tumble.

Vaguelyclassical · 25/10/2026 13:50

Do you walk at a quick pace, OP? I am a loper and have thus always been a bit more prone to trip myself up, even when I was a much younger woman. Also, some shoe/boot styles, especially with slightly emphasized long toe box, can be a bit perilous in and of themselves.

I do need to have my eyes tested. I'm at the reading and driving glasses stage - but not all the time.

I know - if there had been leaves I could have blamed them. Normal council paving slabs, and dry..

I fell over nothing a couple of years ago, it really shook me up and hurt a lot. I’ve not done it again though, so hopefully your accident was the start of something.

NobodyEnjoysAPylon · 25/10/2026 14:16

I had a nasty fall earlier in the year. I was out for a walk with DH, and suddenly was hurtling to the ground. I broke my little finger and bruised my hand and knee badly. Felt really shaken afterwards. I'm 61 btw.

DH says he thinks I was too close to the kerb and tripped off it. It left me feeling quite frightened to go out on my own for a bit. My eyesight is quite poor after several operations on them in recent years.

I've been practising balance, Pilates and yoga for several years to try to help counteract the risk of falls, as I remember my grandmother being entirely helpless when she would have a fall, unable to get herself up off the ground.

OrganicDecafEarlGrey · 25/10/2026 14:50

I fell over recently and I'm 54 but I got a bee in my hair on a countryside walk, did a lot of screaming and flapping my arms about and fell backwards into a hedge! I don't think that would be classified as 'having a fall' 😆

OrganicDecafEarlGrey · 25/10/2026 14:52

I'm not Miranda!

HikingHippo · 25/10/2026 16:34

Im still young (so I keep telling myself! Late 30s) and recently did 6 months with a personal trainer in the lead up to a specific event. The unanticipated side effect is that my general balance and coordination has improved ten fold. Would definitely recommend if you can afford it

I believe that muscle mass and strength is also a key factor for longevity and health in older age too.

Sannabay · 25/10/2026 17:05

Ice skating. But get some protective gear. :) Fab for balance but would advise lessons

Sannabay · 25/10/2026 17:06

Off ice training. Lots of YouTube vids. :)

Relax!
