DD sent home from college with sickness bug...

.....and are supposed to be going to visit my DF tomorrow (he lives some distance away so would be an overnight visit). Would you still go?
I don't think we should go but my DF says there is no reason we shouldn't come and just not give her any food for the rest of today. I've explained that the School Nurse has said a number of her Year Group have been off with a sickness bug so its clearly doing the rounds. Plus I'm worried the rest of us might catch it and really don't want to give it to my 76 year old DF.
My DF is guilt tripping me a bit saying he has booked tickets for an evening out and got food in for us and that I 'should have a more postive attitude that she'll be fine tomorrow.'
My gut (excuse the pun) is saying we should stay home and ride it out to avoid passing it on to anyone else. Wwyd?

Well. You're her parent. Its not up to your df. It's an invite, not a summons.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · Yesterday 15:04

If it makes it easier, lie to DF that one of you started vomiting overnight.

You've kind of hit the nail on the head, this whole weekend at his has felt like a bit of a summons in itself.
Whilst I of course would never want my DD to be poorly there was a slight feeling of relief that we might not have to go.

Stay home. if your daughter is vomiting now, even if she stops overnight and her body is ready for breakfast, she's not going to feel good tomorrow. Plus one of you could catch it but not start being poorly until you are there.

You could say to him yes you will visit to keep the peace for now, and then phone him tomorrow and say she’s still not well, or you have gone down with it?

I think you have your answer, then.
Hope she feels better and you don't all succumb

I’d be lead by whether DC feels up for it and what DFs views were. If both of them don’t mind then I’d go. If either DC feels terrible or DF is worried about catching it then I’d not go.

Honestly, I would do this so as to avoid running the risk of anyone else showing symptoms en route, or whilst you are there, and as you say, OP, also to avoid passing it onto your DF.

Travelling with a vomiting bug has got to be the pits (and you may well find that is yourself on the way back, but hopefully not!).

Your daughter will continue to be contagious for around 48 hours after the vomiting has stopped, I think, so I just wouldn't want to risk it.

Can’t she stay at home? Have you got someone who could check in on her if she wanted?

I personally wouldn’t go, but I think I’m overprotective so unsure if I am right or wrong to stay. I just mention it because she is definitely old enough to manage on her own if she wants to do you guys can still go

Slidershow · Yesterday 15:22

Thanks all, I'm glad its not just me thinking its best to stay home.
DD is 16 and autistic so staying home by herself is not really an option as she wouldn't want to be left. Me and my other DC could maybe still go depending on how everyone is feeling tomorrow but still worried about getting symptoms whilst we're away.

Oh dont go.
Never forgotten when an ill child was brought to a family gathering and threw up. Every one of us ( there were 30ish of us) went down with it within 24 hrs. Grim.

LowlandLucky · Yesterday 15:28

Are you happy for your father to catch this bug?

Honds · Yesterday 15:34

In my family we'd see how things are in the morning and if everyone feels well enough, we'd stick with the plan and people would be happy to take their chances.

We certainly would be taking a positive approach and hoping to go atm.

TheHatOfHappiness · Yesterday 15:59

I am willing to bet he was never the parent who had to deal with the fall out of a child bringing a sickness bug home. Its a shame, but how awful for DD to be made to travel when that sick. Definitely stay home.

I agree.

Surely no decisions need to be made tonight.

Sleep on it and see how everyone feels in the morning. If DD feels okay, and has been fine overnight and she wants to go, and everyone else is also okay then you still go.

Tell your Dad you will let him know in the morning if you will be going or not.

I would try and stay positive and still plan to go unless there was a blindingly obvious reason not to (DD throwing up all night/everyone else is ill too)
