AIBU to think that if there’s a data breach you should automatically get compensation.

Master of Malt had a data breach, we’re very sorry said the email etc etc no payment details kept blah blah just your email and phone number.

Since that breach coincidentally (or not) I have been inundated with spam calls so much so I’ve had to use the ask reason for calling feature on my phone.

I haven’t ordered from Master of Malt in at least 5 years, isn’t it time data was removed and not ever kept so this type of thing can’t happen. It’s a massive pain in the arse.

Compensation for what though? What financial loss have you suffered?

I think people have forgotten what compensation actually means.

Compensation for enabling scammers to waste your time and potentially defraud you? Arguably that would be reasonable, but given that data breaches can involve millions of records, it isn't really practical.

Gengha · 08/10/2026 23:32

I was also involved in that data breach but I’ve not had any calls so maybe it’s not connected

I don’t think every breach merits compensation no

If it's the spam call about the part time job offer then everyone is getting it repeatedly. I've never even heard of Master of Malt so it's not from that.

I think this is the issue - everything only measured in money.

There should be bigger fines to focus the minds of companies.

For the inconvenience/hassle. Compensation isn't only about financial loss.

I think they should be heavily and properly fined but not individual compensation, no. I do think in the world as it currently is though that we hand over data and should know this is likely to happen however robust a companies system may seem. I think the next generation will be far more careful about what they are prepared to hand over.

But not everyone will be inconvenienced or hassled. So how do you determine who has been and to what extent. And that it’s down to your data breach and not that they’ve entered their details somewhere online? If you were being inundated with dozens of scam calls a day, would you be happy with the same compensation as someone else who isn’t receiving any?

Compensation is unworkable - unless you can prove actual financial loss - so massive fines to these companies would work better. Encourage them to only keep essential data and for no longer than necessary.

Why was my post deleted?

Interestingly I've never had spam calls and had this number for 25 years, I've just had to turn the spam feature on my phone as I've been getting loads of spam calls. Also a master of malt customer.

I was also notified about being affected by the master of malt data breach. I don't know if it is connected but I had 99 spam emails in a few days shortly after receiving the notification email, I'm getting spam calls almost daily, my bank account has been hacked and money paid to gambling website called Betway. The bank will give me the money back but that's not the point! I'm not saying it's the fault of master of malt but I bought something from them I think once during lockdown and that's it! Why have they still got my details saved?! It was 6 years ago!

seahorsessky · Yesterday 22:55

I've got tons of spam since the Manchester airport one. Coincidence? I suppose you could say it costs me time to have to read and sort through all those extra messages, so I don't miss something I need to see, and time is money, and there's always the risk that I, or anyone else, could lose money if we accidentally click on something, but, overall, no, I don't think it's likely to qualify us for compensation.
