I don't know much about JA but he was doing the media rounds this week, with several in-depth interviews and he seemed healthy and sharp at 86 years old.
He has passed away and the press release stated he "died peacefully" surrounded by his family. Was he illl?
Maybe I am being morbid but I am trying to reconcile he seemed so well and a week or so later he's gone.

Appols in adv for any offence.

It’s the way you’d wanna go. Well…. then dead

It's what my granny would have called 'a good death '.
My own mum got up, had breakfast, felt a bit tired and went back to bed. She slept away.
It's not the same for everyone.

I'm really sad. I have received his new book today which he had announced as his final novel months ago. And now it really is his final. He had things lined up to promote it this week.
I've read all his books even though forty years ago politically we were not aligned.
It's a good age and a good way to go. A life well lived. But I'm sad I really liked him. I loved his Prison Diaries. I used to like listening to him on GMB.

I’m always rather puzzled by these questions

He was 86 after all.

I think it’s much better to go like this when you are still able to do all of your stuff.

My lovely Mum was up a ladder cleaning her gutters the day she died suddenly. She was 83 …perfect way to go!
My Dad died aged 61 suddenly after spending all day at work as a news editor for BBC ..not so great ,given his age !

I know but I was struck by the term, "he died peacefully with his family," which I assumed he was unwell but he was doing various interviews and seemed well.

It can happen very suddenly though OP. My grandma went to sleep and never woke up, she was fit and well the day before.

He was always in the news in the nineties, often for the wrong reasons, but I hadn’t heard much about him for a while.

I am not sure that he was a man to admire or emulate, apart from being a successful writer and speaker? He was serially unfaithful and there are numerous examples of his sketchy relationship with the truth.

He went to prison for four years, after all. I find it rather staggering that he then resumed his seat in the House of Lords.

Condolences to his family but I think his approach to life has not dated well.

I take from that - and what I've heard about his death - that he'd finished his morning work, took a break and keeled over. Surely a good way to go? Vigorous and engaged to the end.
I didn't like his politics nor his writing but I did see part of an interview with him last week and he looked full of life.

Maybe his wife or kids were around. Even if they weren’t, it’s sort of thing you’d put in a statement to be honest.

He was doing a tour for the book as well. So it sounds like he would have gone suddenly. He may have had health issues though.

RedRiverShore6 · 06/10/2026 21:06

I think similar happened to my mum at 82, she was getting ready to go to the shops and had been perfectly fine and carrying on as usual and just died

RedRiverShore6 · 06/10/2026 21:12

There does seem to be the expectation nowadays though to have a long drawn out death involving care but in fact a lot of people do just suddenly die.

I despised him. He lied to HofP, went to jail, snuggled out his draft book, so breaking rules again, learned nothing from his time in jail. Ghastly man, and his fragrant wife. She is a uni Chancellor at the uni where I am taking a degree. I think i will be choosing not to graduate.

DangerousThingsILove · 06/10/2026 21:42

Reports I’ve read said he died ‘suddenly and peacefully’ in between writing sessions. No mention of family.

Sounds like a great way to go. Had his marbles to the end, no dementia, no decline, no care home…

heart attacks, strokes etc can happen at any time.

(no comment here on Archer as a character.)
