Toxic Parents

I feel like my parents are quite toxic people (maybe not the right word, but can’t think of another that suits how they are).
My Mum left the family home when I was 9, leaving me and my slightly older sister to be cared for by our father, my mother had mental health battles and my father was a functional alcoholic.
My mother has said some awful things, like leaving us was the best thing for us, totally ignoring the fact we grew up without a mother and having to navigate being a young girl alone, she told me in the company of her ex-husband that she didn’t want another child and only had me because my father wanting another child.
She is very argumentative, she has raised her voice at me in public because she didn’t like my opinion, I felt like a child being told off, which led to some turned heads, but there are lots of other things.
My father is critical of people, he said I lived like a pig once, just because my house was messy after having our daughter via c-section, he still consumes too much alcohol and constantly talks negatively, he also used to go through my bedroom when I was a teenager, even though it was my own space.Theres lots of other things too, but it will take to long to write.
I had a difficult time growing up, I developed bulimia, had anxiety and experienced some awful bullying to which I kept to myself, but I still love them, but I realise they don’t do me any good.

How do people deal with having toxic parents?

Sorry to read this. They sound awful. I think you have to accept that they will never be what you deserved and focus on being the best you can for the next generation. You can’t change them, but you are through the worst, you are an adult now you can control your own life. Also, you also don’t actually need to know them at all if that is the best route for you.

What happened to you as a child is not your fault and entirely on them.

Children now adults love their parents no matter how crap they actually are.
You do not need their approval, not that they would ever give you this anyway.

Both of them are selfish people and failed you abjectly from childhood. It is ok not to bother with them now because they are really not worth bothering about.

You need to grieve for the relationship you should have had rather than the one you actually got.

Yes, 'toxic' is definitely the right word for them. So is 'abusive'. I'm sorry you had such awful parents growing up. Flowers

How much contact do you have with them now, and does that contact make you happy? Because if it doesn't make you happy, then there's nothing stopping you from reducing contact with them, or stopping it altogether.

Thanks for all of your replies, I just felt I needed to talk about it.
I see them a couple of times a month, but I always feel quite drained when I leave their company. I don’t want to cut contact because they’re my parents, but I am going to reduce how much time I visit them.
I have a friend who has lovely parents and I’ve always wished for the same, she has her life in order, a great job and a loving husband, I just sometimes wish I had that.

I went NC with my abusive mother many years ago. Best decision I ever made.
