Do these black specks in my son's hair look like lice?

I have found these little black specs on my son’s hair . I thought they were lice eggs but according to google they are white. I’ve scraped them out and they look like debris but there are quite a lot and I’m concerned.

Do they look like lice? The larger brown mark is a freckle

Has he just had a haircut? They look like stray bits of hair to me maybe off the barbers clippers. They don’t look like eggs.

JellyMouldJnr · 12/09/2026 21:38

They do look like lice to me.

Hadalifeonce · 12/09/2026 21:39

If they are lice, they will move.

Justbrieme · 12/09/2026 21:39

Yes they look like maybe they could be lice but don’t see eggs so that is strange.

Fortheloveofpizza · 12/09/2026 21:40

He has but they were there before. He has loads of them on top but harder to see

Yup, look like remains of eggs and possible hatchlings

AliceMcK · 12/09/2026 21:41

Yes.

My DDs came home after 2 days of school full of them. Get the nit comb out. Given how short his hair is you should easily be able to get rid of them. Nit Comb every day for 2 after you get the last one has gone so you catch any strays.

Fortheloveofpizza · 12/09/2026 21:42

They aren’t alive. I used a nit comb to scrape out and it looked like debris. Wonder if they are old or really new

I thought eggs were white but there is definitely no white

Cases are dark and their poo!

Justbrieme · 12/09/2026 21:47

Did you treat him? How would they have died?

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 12/09/2026 21:50

Unmatched eggs are brown. Empty eggs re white. Both are glued to each hair and don’t come off easily.

If the specks are loose, and are not moving, they are not lice.

Comb over white paper or into a white sink. The specks will either move, or not.

I’ve no idea. But I can see they’re not moving. They don’t look like insects to me but obviously something

They don't look like lice or eggs to me

Soontobe60 · 12/09/2026 21:53

Maybe this is obvious, but have you washed his hair?

That makes sense. These must be unhatched then. Really hard to get out but when I did they weren’t moving.

It was washed this morning. This was taken tonight

Is he itching? They don’t look like lice to me and they’d definitely be moving if they were. If you squash one between your finger and nail, what happens?

GeishaTrumpet · 12/09/2026 21:55

I would treat for lice and then keep an eye on it.

jazzandh · 12/09/2026 22:03

Look like the unhatched eggs to me. Both of mine were very blond and the eggs were glued onto the hair shaft just like that.
I found it most effective using my fingers to clear them!

Not itchy although I’ve developed an itch since this thread started 🤣 I’ll keep combing and hopefully they’ll disappear.

Can you pop them between the backs of your thumbnails? If so, then definitely eggs

kidsanddogs101 · 12/09/2026 22:12

Could they be thunderbugs?

Fortheloveofpizza · 12/09/2026 22:13

He’s asleep so I’ll check if I can squish it tomorrow. Hopefully don’t wake to lots of hatched eggs. I didn’t think much of them till I got his hair cut and there are tons of them now it’s so short. Barber never noticed anything though
