I think they would stop applying if the individual is on a mobility scooter (but of course that doesn't have to be age-related )

I think the CPS need to be careful when they choose what cases involving 'seniors' to to prosecute.

The man on the mobility scooter wasn’t arrested. But that wasn’t my question to you. You didn’t answer it.

I once arrested a man for rape - he was in his 70s and used a mobility scooter due to his medical conditions. But he still managed to rape his victim in his flat and threatened her if she told anyone about it.

Should I have told his victim to maybe just kind and let the old man carry on?

(He was convicted and went to prison BTW).

My dad - also aged about 76 - is a fucking menace on his. Scares the shit out of me sometimes the way he drives it. He's also a proper Victor Meldrew and I could absolutely see him getting himself arrested for being a gobshite one day.

Being a ‘senior’ does not excuse nasty racist behaviour, @Solentswimmer - indeed, one could argue that he should have been old enough to know better.

Criminality is criminality - it doesn’t stop being unacceptable once one receives the State pension.

You do realise that people in their 70s can commit crime don't you?

Because if the accused is elderly or very infirm, the very long waiting lists for court trials might mean they have "slipped off the plate" before the case comes to court.
Also they need to consider if trying the case is "in the public interest" so as not to waste money.

Yes, I think they could have a bash at shoplifting but getting into a bar brawl would be physically beyond their capability.

Age is not a barrier to offending nor charges nor convictions. Health alone is rarely sufficient to prevent charges passing the public interest test.

Well, the pensioner with a crutch had a good go at the heckler at the party conference so I don’t think age is a barrier to violence. I do think the arresting of the peaceful and often elderly protestors who quietly hold up signs supporting the Palestinians in Gaza from what is happening there, does see a bit ridiculous but technically they are supporting a banned organisation. However, I don’t think most of them would cause any violence.

I'm in my seventies, and perfectly capable of committing crimes or being a thug, if I wanted to. But fortunately for society, I don't want to.

The guy who battered the woman with his stick at the Reform Conference didn’t look particularly young. And certainly should have been arrested.

So my 17 year old daughter can cause terror on the streets if she likes? Good to know. 👍
