AIBU to feel upset my parents are selling their holiday home?

So I do know I am being unreasonable... but my parents own a holiday home abroad, which we go to with our kids 3-4 times a year as we absolutely love it and it is a cost effective way to have a holiday as we only pay for the flights and cleaner. I've been going for 30 years so feels like a home from home.

My parents are finding it too much to manage and get there so were going to let me and my brother take over management. However, they have now changed their minds and are going to sell it. They openly say they don't need the money, but they want to dispose of it as they're not using it. It is worth a fair amount (more than my house) and the money is just going to sit in a bank account not doing anything for anybody - my parents won't require it for care even if that time comes as they have other means.

I realise this is completely their choice, but I am crushed. I have so many of my happiest memories there, espeically of my children. It enables so much quality family time for us, which as the children get older I know will become more challenging to get at home.

We also won't really be able to afford holidays now. We both work full time in demanding jobs with long hours and have always had the next trip there booked so always had that to look forward to.

Not really sure what I am saying, but I find it upsetting that something so important to me, my husband and kids will be gone for no benefit to anybody.

I’m not sure why there is any issue of tax when there’s a perfectly simple and legal way of avoiding the CGT. You take over all the running etc now, then on your dad’s death your mum passes the property to you. No tax to pay (unless she dies in the next 7 years).

That's exactly what I wanted to say!

OP, I understand why you are sad, I would feel the same. It is very hard now for an avarage family to buy a house like that, impossible even, so when it is in the family already, it is best to keep and cherish it.

What makes you think the OP comes from an average family?

PinkCamelias · 07/09/2026 10:08

@Loghabit her saying they can't afford a house like that, or an equivalent holiday. I meant average in this sense.

The house is worth so much that weekly rental is £7500. On the username the OP began the thread with, her posting history suggests she's sending her kids to private school. I don't know about you but there's nothing "average" about that.

PinkCamelias · 07/09/2026 11:12

Well, I didn't know that, @Loghabit so I have obviously not referred to it. Anyway, what I said is true, an avarage family (any, not necessarily the OP's) cannot afford a house like that abroad...

Places can hold so much meaning and memories, especially if they have been multi generational.

It sounds like this has been a difficult decision for them but it must be hard to think it was going to go one way and for this to be taken away. You're bound to feel sad and I imagine this is also a symbol of how things are changing, and your Dad's illness. Grief and the aging and eventual loss of your parents is bound to be caught up in this.

If there is an opportunity to explore a different holiday completely, rather than try to replicate but never compete with what you've had. Holidays are so precious and imagine it would be soul destroying to try to go to the same place and constantly be reminded of what could have been.

It's hard.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 07/09/2026 12:31

OP (whatever your name is, I seem to see your username as something different to other posters) have you ever considered this from your parents point of view? They realise that your dad's days of travelling are coming to an end. No more monthly visits to check the place, presumably your mum won't want to do it alone. Your dad knowing that his kids and grandkids are out there enjoying themselves and he can't join them.

All the admin and financial burdens that you are unaware of (otherwise presumably you'd already be helping with that, not just offering to do it in future?). Has your builder husband been doing the maintenance?

You're not actually listening to your parents, they no longer want the hassle and the cost, they have far bigger things to think about. Two years ffs, your father has had to think about this for half the amount of the remainder of his life.

Why are people calling the OP Deedeedodo?

Because that appears to be the name op started the thread with. As you can’t name change halfway through a thread I have no idea how OP has managed it 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I've just noticed that now she is hopahop something.
She was definitely Deedeedodo earlier on because I noticed the name as mine also ends with dodo!

Are you Irish/NI? I am and this is totally our family values. I really feel for the OP that this isn't the case.

I’m from England BUT I just did an ancestry thing and it did show my bloodline to be N.Irish 😂 so maybe it’s in our dna.

I expect the OP wanted the thread deleted but MN decided not to as the thread was pulling in lots of clicks (profit). So MN offered moving it to 30days and changing her username in the hope that she’d accept that. If that is the case OP - you should have demanded deletion.

Possibly OP has 2 accounts ?

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 08/09/2026 10:51

But I can only see one username for the OP from the beginning of the thread. I was late to the thread so don't know if it's changed since it was started. If it has I would say only MNHQ could do it and I think that's very odd.

Itt is one of their situations where no one is being unreasonable. They’re not unreasonable to sell if it’s becoming too much and you’re not unreasonable to feel sad

Agree; but I'd offer to buy them out - albeit it seems daft if they are well off and don't need the money.
