whats the smallest amount of money you could get by making with your family. Assuming no holidays but occasional treats?

For me it would be about £2500 a month. Just a husband and no kids as TTC

Live alone , just me and the dog , no mortgage so could get by on £600-£700 a month fairly easily .

No mortgage, just 2 adults, 2 dogs and occasional visiting kids/grandkids. But large house = large bills and I think we'd need a bare minimum of £2.5k to have an acceptable standard of living.

£1000 no mortgage.

Live alone, no mortgage, about £650.

Ovoemconserva · 01/08/2026 18:34

Survival would be £700 but that would be living on rice and my bills covered.

Wherethedogsits · 01/08/2026 18:36

£2500 is what I live on with holidays and treats 😂 and I know many live on much less.

Our bills aren’t high but with bills, food and fuel we would need £1500.

GingerCatLove · 01/08/2026 18:38

Just DH and I now (and a cat).
Survive in London - £650pm ( though it would not be fun!)

pastadish · 01/08/2026 18:46

We have no mortgage would probably need about 3K I think. I haven’t added it up tbh

Mirrorxxx · 01/08/2026 18:51

£3000

Didimum · 01/08/2026 18:53

Our fixed outgoing per month is £5775. That’s anything that is paid on a monthly, ongoing basis.

Taking away anything ‘frivolous’ and non essential (kids clubs, cleaner, subscriptions etc), we’d need £5360 to pay for all essential bills, insurance, food, childcare and commuting costs.

No mortgage but all the direct debits that come out add up to around £1800, including things like kids activities. Add food on and probably around £2500.

Live alone, no mortgage, about £650.

I live alone in my own house & pay around £500 per month on Council tax, gas & electric, water, insurance (car & property), TV license, VED and broadband.

RaininSummer · 02/08/2026 09:11

Two of us about £1200 assuming no major house or car expenses.

distinctpossibility · 02/08/2026 09:15

"Comfortably" is throwing me here. Our direct debits are about £2000 a month so probably £3000 to keep things roughly the same day-to-day, and possibly even squeeze in a caravan holiday a year.

Cancelling things like Netflix and football club membership etc, all holidays etc., and we could probably get down to £2500.

kattyjean · 02/08/2026 09:54

I’ve just done my income protection insurance and I opted for £3000 a month for my salary alone (that’s about £1800 less than what I actually get a month) and that would be on the condition DH is still getting £3000 a month. So £6000 a month is what we settled for as our minimum (that’s not basic survival obviously! But to meet our bills and the minimum level of comfort we’d like to protect).

Totaldramallama · 02/08/2026 10:36

Our bills some months come to about 3k, not including food. If we had to we could drop the nice gym and one car, but that would still leave bills of around 2.3k at least.

So it would be a real struggle to live on a small amount. I reckon we'd need about 3.5k coming in to still have some treats and not get in to debt.
