AIBU to consider buying expensive electrical Xmas gifts now?

Looking to purchase an iPad as a gift for Xmas.

The model I want to buy has recently gone up in price by £100 due to the increased costs of RAM. However, I’ve found the model I want for the original retail price (£100 less than currently on sale for everywhere else) at a reputable retailer.

Would you buy now to save the £100? It is unlikely to come down by £100 in the Black Friday sales and I imagine if a new iPad comes out, it won’t come down in price that much. My husband thinks it is too early. It will come with a year’s warranty and I will of course check all works when it arrives.

I don't do Christmas or birthday gifts any more, rather meet up for a get-together sometime around there - December/January.

The world is heaving with crap already, all in land-fill sites.

An iPad is hardly immediately destined for landfill, and I expect the recipient would be getting one anyway. And it might be for their child, and then I doubt they’d want a meet up in January instead…

I wouldn’t buy this early because of limited warranty, but if the £100 is worth it to you then go ahead.

Thank you, I was just about to say the same thing. The iPad will be for my child. The £100 saving could get her some extra bits for Xmas .

What is the point of this answer. It’s not what the OP asked about . You do you an all that .

On the basis of the limited warranty no I would not buy this now. Closer to the time of the price is prohibitive, I’d either use topcashback or buy from CEX.

Flyinpig · 13/07/2026 20:47

But why wouldn't you? I have started Xmas shopping already to spread the cost. Prices go up near Xmas too and black Friday deals are not what they used to be.. so get it while you can.

I’m thinking purely about the 12 month warranty!

Yes I see what you are saying but the prices have recently sky rocketed due to the cost of RAM so I’d be saving £100.

What’s RAM and why has it gone up in price?(Sorry!)

If it is just for a kid who simply wants an iPad (vars specs), I would purchase on a secondhand site like Backmarket (I am sure others are still around) whose sellers offer a 12 month warranty and spend the difference on something fun or edible.

Wiki can help you analyse the various specs and how long the models will be supported by operating system upgrades.

The same model on backmarket is only £6 cheaper and in “fair condition” due to recent price increases! Even the second hand ones have gone up in price. It is crazy.

Does it have to be an iPad? I've always had Lenovo tablets, fraction of the price but fulfilled all our needs. My daughter as a 9 inch which was £90 and I have a 10 inch which was £120.

Look at the details of the consumer rights bill. It trumps warranty - an item must last a "reasonable length of time" if a fault does occur beyond 12 months from purchase but within a time frame you would expect it to last you can be entitled to repair or replacement. I was refunded the cost of a pair of headphones after they broke having had them for 1 year 10 months. As long as I returned the broken headphones they offered a full refund as wouldn't have expected them to have broken in that time frame.

How old is the child? The other option is to buy it for Christmas but given them it early and to get use out of the tablet as long as they are of an age where they can understand that your tablet was part of your Christmas present and not feel hard done by on Christmas morning

I’d wait until Black Friday sale, Amazon do good deals on electrical appliances then, and you won’t lose as much warranty time. I got my DD and SIL a ninja cook thing a couple of years ago, saved over £150.

I bought an iPad new late last year for £247 I think it was - and agree second hand were not much of at all less at that time. It was an eBay flash sale thing

Don't forget you also have statutory legal rights. If the iPad fails within a few years, you have a right to repair, replacement or a compensation due to lack of longevity.

You need to pay for it using a credit card, but I recently got 2/3 of the cost of a household appliance refunded by my credit card because it failed just over 2 years after I bought it and the place I bought it from was being slopey shouldered about it's legal responsibilities.

It might be worth buying the one from the retailer that hasn't yet increased it's prices, especially as discounts on iPads are often limited in frequency and amount.
