Hi I'm meeting sone friends at a stately home concert on saturday. The others are coming via public transport so I said I'd do the picnic. Its someone's birthday. There are 7, possibly 8, of us.
Do I do a sandwich platter from waitrose / morrisons, posh crisps, a big salad and pork pie? Or is that too boring for this occasion? Should I go for quiche, salads, make some nice sandwiches, sausage rolls etc...what would you want in this situation? Pudding is covered.

I do things that can easily be eaten with fingers.

So rather than quiche I would do mini bacon and egg tarts - make as you would jam tarts but with bacon or lardons and obviously egg

A couple of baguettes and take butter with you with slices of ham / deli meats.

Hard boiled eggs - slice in to quarters when you get there.

Cherry tomatoes, olives, cheese - get the small ones in packets eg baby bel.

Vegi sticks and hummus or a dip.

I would do mini quiches / savoury tarts as pp suggested, deli meats and other antipasto eg olives, cheese, roasted veg
dip/hummis
focaccia / baguettes
some fruit eg berries and grapes
pudding

enjoy!

Like the idea of the mini tarts, thank you. All these ideas seem low-effort which I definitely like!

What time is the concert? Will people have already had a main meal and these are just nibbles OR will the picnic be a main meal? I agree with making it finger food. Could you task someone to bring napkins, some bring paper plates, someone else plastic glasses, some folks or spoons to serve things? Check what shops are nearby and pick up a sandwich/wrap platter. Can you take wine/soft drinks? I'd ask others to buy a bottle of wine or bottle of drink when they get off the train. Otherwise, how will YOU carry enough for 7 people???

Jars of olives, sliced cheeses, slices meats etc are easyish to eat one handed.

IF you want to cook, here are some ideas:

-I've posted these lots of times because the are so versatile and can be made with just about anything. Ham, bacon, spring onions, chives, tuna/sweetcorn, tomatoes, semi-dried tomatoes, asparagus and almost any cheese. https://www.amummytoo.co.uk/filo-pastry-mini-quiches-great-for-kids-to-make-and-eat/
-Cook drumsticks in a crumb or flavoured coating (not a sticky one), wrap foil on the handle end and they are filling and can be eaten cold
-onion bhajis with homous
-pre cut celery, carrot and pepper sticks then bring some dips

Ooooo thanks, the filo pastry version looks delicious, and the chicken idea is good too.

I am driving so no issues with getting stuff there. I am giving a lift to a couple of the friends who live in the same direction as me so they are bringing the drinks and dessert. Its main meal time.

Another idea is Spanish omelette/tortilla which you could cut into small, finger sizes. It might be a bit too many eggy things if you do the mini filo quiche also, but the torillas come in chorizo, spinach or pepper versions too.

Some fresh baguettes with either butter or dips too

Cheese straws are easy to make.

Buy a sheet of ready rolled puff pastry, Dijon mustard and your favourite grated cheese, I like parmesan.

Put the pastry of a baking tray, 'butter' it with the mustard and then sprinkle on the cheese.

Use a butter knife to mark out the 'straws'.

Bake for 12 - 15 mins, take out, cool and 'snap' in to straws.

Well, in Australia, we would go the old zucchini slice. Really good on a warm day.

Thank you for the recipe. I have courgettes (as the call them in the UK) and tomatoes growing daily so will definitely be giving this one a try. 😋
