Missed wedding - money gift

I was unable to attend a family wedding yesterday (evening only invitation, just me).

Family member is lovely, but we don’t see each other regularly or keep in touch outside of other family events - last one being over two years ago.

I’d still like to send a card and give a monetary gift.

How much would you give in these circumstances?

£20

Depends what you can afford. Maybe £50.

How do we know what’s appropriate? You could be on the bones of your arse or living in an 18 million pound mansion

As it’s evening only, relatively small gift. I don’t like giving small cash gifts so instead I would arrange to have a bottle of fizz sent, or if that’s too expensive a card is enough as it doesn’t really cost them much to have evening guests.

I’m not sure she drinks champagne, but some sort of hamper might be an idea?

I was l thinking £100 monetary gift, but already had an unexpected car bill this month and have three immediate family birthdays in the next three weeks, so could be a stretch.

£50 max, more like £20-30 for an evening invite

Lomonald · 12/07/2026 17:31

Just send a gift voucher for john.lewis or somewhere, £50 is fine and a nice card.

rookiemere · 12/07/2026 17:44

I wouldn’t give £100 for an evening invite. £50 is very generous- and that’s fine to give in cash I think.

DappledThings · 12/07/2026 17:46

£50. Evening only invite and you weren't even there. Anything at all is very nice of you and £100 is hugely excessive.

So you need to decide what you can afford based on your finances (and your relationship with the bride)

It might be £10 it might be £100 it might be £250
