Handover issue

My ex has just picked up our child (toddler) for a handover (from my house) and he was either still drunk from drinking yesterday or masking a hangover. He was really unusually cheerful and quite literally shouting (at 9am) in my garden. He dropped my son on the pavement within the first few minutes scratching his arm. He is normally a good father so u didn’t want to make a scene but now they have left I wonder if I should have said something? What would you do?

Was he driving?

Floppyearedlab · 04/07/2026 09:56

I wouldn’t have handed the child over. Sorry.

Whodunnit508 · 04/07/2026 09:57

Drip Feed sorry - I can’t be sure he was drunk. He was clearly showered and looked normal I just know that his behaviour was too cheerful and loud and I know he was drinking all day yesterday

Yes but you haven't mentioned if he was driving??

Yes

Whodunnit508 · 04/07/2026 09:58

Yes

In that case my answer to 'what would you do', is not hand him over (obviously).

Francestein · 04/07/2026 10:00

Then why the fuck did you let your kid get in the car? You should have called the police

Whodunnit508 · 04/07/2026 10:02

Because I don’t know he if he was drunk. He would not be drinking this morning and I he might have just been masking a hangover

He was also up super early in the morning confirming over a twxt the pick up details so I initially assumed that he was fine until I saw him

Edited

If he was shouting and "merry" and dropped your child, he is not hungover - he is still pissed.

Marwoodsbigbreak · 04/07/2026 10:29

I would have refused handover and told him I would call police if he tried to drive.

Then he was probably up all night.

And if he was being loud and extra, there's a chance he could've been snorting coke.

You need to watch this man like a hawk.

Hedgehogsaremyjam · 04/07/2026 12:19

If he was drinking all day yesterday he could easily still be over the limit this morning

Whodunnit508 · 04/07/2026 13:15

I messaged him to check they are at his and they are and I have also told him that I’d noticed his behaviour. I was told that I should be ashamed of myself and that he was excited to see his son and that accidents happen. If he ever does it again, I’ll just call the police to do a breathalyser or a drug test

Does he have a coke habit that you know about OP?

Whodunnit508 · 04/07/2026 15:44

He is an ex coke addict but he stayed off it for years when we were together. He did used to take other hard drugs when out sometimes (when we were together)

I can't actually believe you let him take your son if you suspected he was drunk/had taken coke?!

I don’t think he was on coke. That’s not what I said.

I’m absolutely gobsmacked and appalled that you let him take your child in a vehicle when you suspected he’d had a drink, whether you knew it to be true or not. As a mother myself, I cannot comprehend even considering letting him take your child and that’s without him dropping your poor kid. JFC.

Gardenisablooming · 07/07/2026 15:39

Yabu to have handed your dc over. Your ex needs to convince a judge he is sober in every way.
I reported my exh for drink driving. No regrets.

You don't know he's not!
