Any insights into the benefits of a university summer school?

Hi to all,
I have a daughter who is going to attend a university summer school mid July.
It's for one week, daughter is currently in sixth form year 12.
Can anyone give me any information about how this is of any benefit or of importance?

Any information will be greatly appreciated,
from anyone who has any knowledge or experience of this.

The reason for this chat is just to gain more insight, for myself.

Many thanks. 😊

😞I guess there is no useful advice to share.

Both of mine did these. They enjoyed them, one made a friend who he still keeps in touch with 14 years later because they met again at Warwick both doing maths.
I don't think they made a deal of difference to their choices of uni or subject but on balance worthwhile.

Networking, independence, confidence building, enjoyment and the chance to make friends as said above. Lots of good reasons.

My eldest did one at Oxford ten years ago. She loved it, it refined her degree path choices.

A few weeks ago, she was back in the same room that the summer school was held in, giving a seminar having just got her PhD.

What do you mean by benefit or importance?
Will it give her an insight into being at university? Maybe - though being in a university during the summer holidays is very different from being there during term time.
Will it be fun? Hopefully, and she might meet other interesting people who she wants to stay in touch with.
Will she learn something about a subject she enjoys? Hopefully! It might make her curious to find out more and also give her something to write about in a future personal statement. Or she might be put off the subject - also a useful experience.

Did you pay for the summery school or is this some sort of free ‘access’ course?
Regardless, I‘m sure she’ll get something out of the experience!

Advice - go there with an open mind and get stuck in! Is she looking forward to it?

I did in 2004. I met two of my best friends there, who I’m still friends with to this day.

I did one back in the day, got to work in labs, stay in halls, eat horrible food.
DC did two - a specialist ASD end of yr11 which I went along to, and then another end of year 12 that was part of the uni's outreach programme that was a few day trips and a residential, with sample lectures. Got to make friends and stay in halls, and also reduced her UCAS offer by 2 grades.

Many thanks to everyone that has replied.
It has been great reading your replies.
It has given me reassurance that my DD will enjoy herself and benefit from the experience at the same time.

DS did one, he really enjoyed it. It helped prepare him for uni and reduced the grades he needed.

@Moonlaserbearwolf thankyou for your reply.
No she is not paying for the summer school.
Yes, she is really excited and looking forward to it.

@Rosesandthorns66 hope she has a great time!

It depends what you regard as a benefit. A friend of mine used to regularly teach at these and said they were an absolute shagfest. 😂
