How to mark a death anniversary?

Today marks 1y since my DM passed. She was 61 and died quite unexpectedly.

I stayed with my sister last night. (She’s 28, I’m 35.) We both have a DS each (8 and 5)

We aren’t sure what to do today - how to mark the passing of our lovely Mum.

What have you done to mark an anniversary?

I am so sorry for your loss and sending you lots of love.
Are your children at school today? if so, could you and your sister go for a nice walk/ brunch/ lunch to celebrate your Mum?
If children are with you, what about a trip to a park/ woodland for a walk before it gets too hot, then out for lunch. Talk about your Mum, share happy and funny memories x

My family is Catholic so we always have Masses said for anniversaries.
Would you go for lunch maybe?

I make my mother in law’s signature dessert every year on her birthday rather than the anniversary of her death and it’s a good way of prompting everyone to chat about her and share memories.

It’s two years tomorrow for me, sorry about losing your lovely mum.

I’m having a picnic tomorrow evening with my teenagers, picky bits and wine. I was going to make her favourite cake but it’s a bit hot for baking!

I had my big cry earlier in the week so now I’m feeling okay, sad but looking forward to tomorrow.

sending some mnFlowers

Thanks for replies so far. We’re in Scotland so it’s day 1 of the summer holidays - they finished up yesterday. And unfortunately our good weather is over and the thunderstorms rolled in last night. The weather feels strangely appropriate to our feelings.

Agree with the “big cry” - I had mine earlier in the week so don’t feel like crying either?

A Romanian friend gave me the idea of donating something that has a connection to the dead person in their memory.
I gave a copy of a book my mum liked to the local library.

I lost my lovely MIL 5 years ago. The first few years we had big family get togethers.
This year it's been a bit more low key due to lots of other stuff going on.
A few suggestions that may help; lighting a candle, saying a prayers/talking about your mum, planting a rose or any favourite flowers, planting some seeds, visit a church to light a candle, having a nice drink and toasting her.

Thinking of you today. It will get easier I hope.
