DS sunburnt after Duke of Edinburgh camping expedition. Best remedies?

My DS went camping and canoeing with school this week. I picked him up today and he’s really burned his arms and legs. He put suntan cream on his face but didn’t use any on the rest of his body. He got burned on the first day (Tuesday) and sweated in his waterproofs Wed and today to make sure he didn’t get any more sun on him. We’re going on holiday to more sun on Saturday!
Whats the best remedy to take the heat out of his limbs? Just after sun? Aloe Vera? I can hopefully pick some up tomorrow. Thanks!

If you have any plain yoghurt in that’s supposed to be quite good.

Oral non steroidals

Cool shower and then drape with cool cloth for 10 mins at a time and keep repeating

Aloe Vera is the best

cool showers, baths and and cloths - NOT cold and not for too long
aloe vera gel
drink lots of electrolyte water - bet he’s mega dehydrated
watch out for heat stroke/ sun poisoning
keep him covered up / factor 50/ in the shade on holiday

Half a cut tomato is an old remedy and it does work - less messy than yogurt!

Thanks everyone. He had a cool shower and I found some after sun which has really helped. He had a pint of water with electrolytes in it which made him feel much better in no time. He was obviously dehydrated. I’ll try and get some aloe Vera tomorrow.
I think the heat will be out of it by the time we go on holiday but he’s got rash vests and will be covering himself in spf 50 anyway.

Sudocrem works wonders.

I always use E45 on sunburn, heals it really quickly!

TheChristieAffair · 25/06/2026 23:44

Antihistamine helps too if it starts itching etc

Nurofen/non-steroidals work on sunburn? I have never heard this before! Every day’s a school day.

Get some Aloe Vera cream or spray keep it in the fridge and use that on it 🙂

I’ll give him some ibuprofen today and shove his after sun in the fridge-good idea.
