Is it rude to cancel 3 days before?

Just putting this here for others opinions.

Ddogs used to go to a brilliant day care/home boarding which has now closed due to tragic circumstances nobody could have predicted.

Have tried to find another but there hasn't yet been one as good.

Found one close by that has chickens and donkeys and other animals living there also. One dog of ours can go but not the other as he's a div and won't settle until he's had one of those chickens.

We go away on Saturday and the plan was for smaller, older chicken obsessed dog to stay with family and the other, who needs more exercise, to go to the boarding place. Each time I've asked if he can go for a bit of time to see the place before he's dropped off for a week, the answer has been "sorry, we're full." Meanwhile my parents have said they'll take both dogs to save us some money.

Would I be rude and unkind to just cancel dog's place for next week? We're due to go away with family in October so would need another dog care then, but if one dog is relentless with his chicken pursuit, I'm going to have to find somewhere else anyway?

No. Its a business. Just check their terms and conditions. Mine go to day care and also board at the same place - I have to give a minimum of 24 hours notice.

Also, I would be very wary about using somewhere that hasn't actually met your dog. At mine they had to go for a trial day before I could even register them for day care and then, even though they go to day care once a week and had been going for at least 6 months before I needed an overnight stay for them, they still had to go for a trial overnight.

3 days is longer than 24 hours. EDIT sorry I thought you were saying don’t cancel - just seen your second comment.

I’d cancel OP if they’re so full that you can’t even visit to get your dog used to the place, they’re clearly not struggling for customers.

I voted to cancel, but not because of the money.

I wouldn't be leaving my dog with strangers they had never met before. I'd want them to have had a few trial days first to see how it went. Have you met the people yourself or were they too busy/full to see you too?

That was like the first place I used, but of course can't any longer. Both dogs used to go regularly for the day, which helped with work and also kept them socialising. Plus they'd be shattered when they came home which was a bonus. Staying over never felt like a big thing then as the owners knew the dogs and vice versa. There'd be other dogs that mine got to know so they might be put with 'friends'. This sounds so ridiculous doesn't it? 😳😂

I really wanted him to at least have a trial day before us leaving him. I've met them and they did seem ok. I knew it wouldn't be ideal for our older dog as he would make his mission to savage a chicken.
Dog won't be walked but that's alright if he can play all day with other dogs I thought. The first place we used didn't walk them either but they had a ginormous plot so the dogs had so much space to run. They also had an enormous paddling pool in the shade which they'd have out in weather like we currently have. This place doesn't have a big space or a pool but beggars can't be choosers.
If money were no object, I'd open the best doggy boarding! 😂

Mine have had a better day than me today!

I’ve spend 6 hours sat in a 38 degree office with no air conditioning. They have played in the water area, played in the woods area and then moved between the two air conditioned indoor areas. You can tell they’ve not done as much as usual as they are usually zonked out by now!

Mine go here.

it takes me completely out of my way to take them and collect them every Tuesday but boy its worth it.

Anyone looking for day care/boarding in the Chesterfield area I can’t recommend it highly enough.

It doesnt sound ridiculous at all. Mine have friends! One of them was invited to a bloody birthday party and came home with a goodie bag!!!

Fortunately I didnt have to listen to them complain that the other one wanted to go (they are in different packs) like I would have had to when the kids were little.

Mine will NOT be having birthday parties. DH already complains that I pay for them to have a puppacino every week as it is!

DidntLikeTheEnding · 23/06/2026 22:20

By all means cancel if you want to save money but to cancel because you can't go and visit is crazy. Your dog doesn't need to visit the place before you drop it off there, it's not a kid going to nursery!

mondaytosunday · 23/06/2026 22:56

I’ve never heard of a place that allows a ‘trail day’! My dogs used to go to kennels then I had a mate who would stay then I used Trustedhousesitters a couple times. Now both gone sadly but again, never had a trail day.
