I just wanted to say thank you to the people of Makerfield for not electing a Reform MP. I have no doubt it’s going to be tough and that Andy Burnham has his work cut out for him. But I woke up this morning feeling positive about politics for the first time in a couple of years. You have said No to Trump as well as Farage. You have said No to the possibility of ICE style deportations. You have said No to semi-facist views and old fashioned takes on women’s bodily rights. Thank you Makerfield. 🩷

I agree. I'm so happy this morning. Well done Makerfield!

Springtimeinsunshine · 19/06/2026 08:08

Thank them for what? Throwing this country into even more turmoil once he goes for the top job? He doesn't care about his new constituents, he was using them for his ambition to be PM.

It's buckle up time.

Holdonforsummer · 19/06/2026 08:50

So you wanted Farage to get a boost, did you? Sometimes there is no perfect answer or solution but we have to vote for decency and hope and that is what has happened here.

No, and don't put words into my mouth.

I wanted stability for once, is that so hard to understand?

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/06/2026 09:01

Didn’t they vote Burnham to oust Starmer? That’s a big part of what’s happened.

TopPocketFind · 19/06/2026 09:03

They could have voted Kenyon to oust Starmer but they voted against Farage's reform.

Thank you Makerfield.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 19/06/2026 09:04

I don't buy this "hope over division" BS. People just really, really want Starmer out.

I would never vote Reform but I cannot see how another Labour leader will do much good and it means more uncertainty damaging the markets.

profiterolesarelovely · 19/06/2026 09:11

I’m very relieved that vile Robert Kenyon didn’t win. But also horrified that so many people DID vote for him and that the openly racist Restore party got so many votes. Also, more than 40% of people didn’t vote at all. I wonder why when so much is at stake?

Wrong, he lives a mile outside of the constituency, his kids went to the local state school. He is always out and about in the local pub and supermarket. He does care about Makerfield.

He is also our last defence against a reform government as even though the economy is growing well and Starmer stood up to trump over being dragged into the Iranian war, he remains deeply unpopular with the electorate. Apparantly you need to have a personality to be elected these days.

I would much rather have a traditional labour, conservative or coalition government than Reform. Anyone but that Russian ally and scoundrel Farage.

Holdonforsummer · 19/06/2026 09:14

Not sure how voting Reform will create stability!

Mayoral election now and a leadership campaign.

He changes his mind constantly.
U-turn Burn.

He's as convictionless as Starmer.

Holdonforsummer · 19/06/2026 09:36

Anything better than Farage.

Whilst I don't support Reform, given that this result opens us up to a Socialist Government, people might want to be careful what they wish for!

Sarah2891 · 19/06/2026 09:40

Agreed, OP. Very happy to see this result.

I think it was mainly to oust Reform.

dottiehens · 19/06/2026 10:06

I can only say thank god we are leaving this country end of summer. Good luck and I will be praying for the hard workers to be able to feed their kids and pay their mortgages.

I think it was a vote against this type of thing.

Thank you, Makerfield
Purplecatshopaholic · 19/06/2026 10:31

Burnham is all about Burnham. That said, he’s not Reform and for that I am grateful.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 19/06/2026 12:20

They voted Burnham to not give reform any traction. Well done Makerfield.

bittertwisted · 19/06/2026 12:23

If he does contest and win, first Scouse prime minister since Gladstone
good with me

Sidebeforeself · 19/06/2026 12:26

Let’s all screen shot this thread once Burnham becomes PM . He flounders when asks questions on any big policy issues, has already backtracked on views he held as Mayor once he got a whiff of a shot to be PM. Can’t wait to see him sitting down with Trump and telling him all about what he did for the bus system in Manchester.

BurnhamBeatsReformRacists · 19/06/2026 12:27

I very much agree.

Now onwards to Number 10!

Hope you don't use the nhs or claim your state pension if you're so against socialism!

A more socialist government is absolutely what I wish for.
Edit: i should have quoted @Miranda65 directly.
