How long did it take you to love golf?

I’m three sessions in.

I have enjoyed it so far but I’ve not fallen instantly in love. I am needing to cajoule myself to go.

On balance I’m enjoying it (I think) but other women I’ve spoken to seem to adore it immediately.

Any insights appreciated!

I don't get it. Not going to be retirement hobby for me that's for sure!

IJustKnowIt · 17/06/2026 04:58

Long enough that I'm still waiting for it to happen!

babyproblems · 17/06/2026 04:59

I don’t get it either.
i wouldn’t carry on if i felt I had to work at something to find enjoyment in it!
will add that the cappuccinos on golf courses are usually excellent 😁 can you just go to the cafe instead. I wouldn’t bother with the green 😂

I guess everyone's different but it takes a while to learn the skill. Are you still going from driving ranges?

The nice thing about golf is the reality social side in a coarse

ChimneyPot · 17/06/2026 05:27

Are you playing with the right people?

I did a set of group lessons a with a group of women I didn’t know.
They were lovely and one was very entertaining. I had to come back each week just to hear updates on her life.
The enjoyment of golf was very much secondary to the people for the first while.
The first golf trip away also helped cement by enjoyment.

Gateappreciation · 17/06/2026 07:02

I used to enjoy the lessons and the social side. Wasn’t so bothered about playing actual golf! It does seem to be all consuming for some, though. Never got that love.

Maybe it’s not the sport for you. Try having tennis lessons instead?

sittingonabeach · 17/06/2026 07:04

Is there a reason you are trying to love it?

I live five minutes from a stunning course that we go to most weekends.

Also I want to meet new people, get out in the fresh air, increase my activity levels.

And I’m quite competitive and enjoy hitting the ball well!

I’d also love to feel passionate about something.

I’d also love to feel passionate about something.

I think that tends to come more organically though, not picking something then trying to feel passionate about it.

I quite like golf, some of my friends play and I sometimes go to the driving range with my dad. But I wouldn’t keep going if I didn’t like it!

I’d also love to feel passionate about something.

But golf clearly isn't it.

IMTOOMessy · 17/06/2026 11:32

I have had three sessions 🤣🤣🤣

And have on balance enjoyed it. Did you read the post?!

Focalpoint · 17/06/2026 11:36

Not until I was able to reliably hit the ball in the air and reasonably straight, I have my handicap and was regularly scoring. By this stage I had my golf buddies and I started to really love it.

I’d be really surprised if anyone loved it after a few lessons. But it is definitely worth sticking with as it is one of the few sports you can do for the rest of your life and is great fun once you get going.

Jellycatspyjamas · 17/06/2026 11:37

55 years and I’m still waiting.

IMTOOMessy · 17/06/2026 11:37

Thank you Focal - that’s really helpful.

And yep! I’m in my mid 40s now but trying to think ahead.

I’ve learned to take satisfaction from when it goes well and you hit a great shot, and ignore the ones where you spang the ball into the trees. Winter golf can be a bit of a slog but on a summers day it’s great to be outdoors.

Finding the right people to play with makes all the difference. We play for fun and have a good gossip on the way round - plus coffee and cake at the halfway point.

SabrinaThwaite · 17/06/2026 11:54

And yes to it helping you keep active - we passed a couple coming off the 18th yesterday, the man was saying that he was tired, and his wife said ‘that’s because you’re 82 and play golf 3 times a week’.

IMTOOMessy · 17/06/2026 12:51

82! That’s incredible Sabrina.

And yes to cake.
