When to take gifts in for orthodontist?

Hi I’ve noticed when we have been for check ups for my daughters brace people bring in gifts when they remove braces. She is getting them off tomorrow and then back a few days later to pick up her retainer. The Friday appointment is with someone else who hasn’t done her braces. So do I take the gifts in tomorrow for the orthodontist and reception/nurses or take them in on Friday? I know it’s first world problems but I’m not sure what to do. I’d rather give them to the lady who has been seeing her this whole time and says thanks but then we are back Friday. So I’m unsure!

Gifts? Don’t they get paid monthly? That’s atrocious.

Really? When I was little there were no gifts for teachers at ends of term, only if they were leaving or retiring. Now teachers get tonnes of stuff (parents often treating it as a competitive sport) and now people are giving orthodontists post-brace presents?

World has gone mad, especially when orthodontists are paid vastly more than teachers.

I think it would be extremely odd to give gifts in this situation. Take your kid out for a treat to celebrate getting her braces off instead.

hahaha, I wouldn't take a gift in for my orthodontist unless they had gone massively over and above what is required, and what I pay insane amounts of money for.

And even if other people do, I'd feel zero pressure to od the same.

SausageRoll2020 · 01/06/2026 16:42

Gifts?
Just say thank you, pay (presuming that's it's paid treatment) and then leave.

If they've given exceptional service write a nice positive review, nothing else is needed.

Are you giving a gift just because you have seen other people do this? Orthodontists are very highly paid anyway, so unless they went over and above all sorts of ways and you genuinely want to express your gratitude, there is really no need. But if you do feel this way then leave the present behind the counter with the receptionist.

My daughter's orthodontist has a Tesla with private plates in the car park, seems like he's making enough money to not need a token gift from me.

What a daft idea!

aurpod1980 · 01/06/2026 16:59

No way!! Our orthodontic tretment has cost £3,5k it’s mainly been the orthodontic specialist nurse tweaking away … the chap who owns our practice owns 5 others …

creamcheeseandlox · 01/06/2026 17:13

A gift to their orthodontist?? This is a joke surely.

PotatoBreadForTheWin · 01/06/2026 17:16

I’ve paid the orthodontist nearly 10k to sort out two mouths. No way am I buying him a gift on top of that

heloobyeee111111111 · 01/06/2026 18:05

Really?? We’ve seen gifts like flowers cards chocolates etc on the reception as a thank you. I won’t bother now 😂

Yup. And put up with patronising, unhelpful service. I wouldnt spend a fiver on a frappe for ours.

Ours has been through the NHS but they do private work as well. They’ve all been really helpful and lovely. I just thought it was the norm when I’ve seen all the cards etc. I was wrong obviously 😂
