GoFundme. No point? Or still worth a try?

Would anybody give to Just Giving nowadays?

I've given to a handful over the years, always a small amount that I wouldn't really miss iykwim, & at the back of my mind I think it might be a scam. I've also only given to ones who have been given very little so far (which is a weird kind of rule that I made up for myself)

I've seen a lot of negativity about it recently.

Title tweaked by MNHQ to make it clear she is talking about GoFundme.

Depends what you are raising money for.

POTC · 25/05/2026 17:52

Yes, Jason Manford does a whole thing called Charity Ninjas and only supports the just giving platform as it has more checks

Thank you for the response. Vet bills & general cat care for an older cat.

Oh really? I'll have a look. Thank you.

Jason Manford has a 'Charity Ninjas' Facebook group where he picks a particular Just Giving project each Friday evening and encourages people to anonymously give a couple of quid to help them reach their target - I've contributed to a few of them.

That's very lovely of him (& the people who give)

I wouldn’t give to that. That’s what insurance is for surely.

BoredZelda · 25/05/2026 18:14

I would donate if I knew the person and it was a great cause. I wouldn’t give to anyone random, nor for vets bills for a pet.

It’s possible PP are getting confused. I give a lot on Justgiving as it’s my main way of donating to charitable fundraisers.

I would never give to a crowdfunding page on there, or a gofundme page, I would only use it where the end recipient is a charity.

onmylastnerveseriously · 25/05/2026 18:35

You mean GoFundme OP, not just giving

No chance. Firstly, I would assume that was a scam. One targeted at particularly naive, stupid & gullible people.

Even if it was genuine, the answer would still be ‘no’. Your pets, your financial responsibility.

I will support genuine charity fundraising, if it’s a charity I approve of, but I’m certainly not subsidising people who can’t afford to look after their pets.

Charities, yes.

Random people living beyond their means, no.

BillieWiper · 25/05/2026 19:02

Yeah I don't think it's appropriate for pet care. That really is your own responsibility. Everyone knows what pets can cost and you make the choice to get them and you have to sacrifice things or sadly re-home if it's healthy or worst case scenario, have it PTS if it's too ill and old.

The reality of prolonging an animal's life with expensive treatment or meds when it won't really have a decent quality of living isn't something some people agree with. The cat can't consent to treatment.

ImagineYouDidnt · 25/05/2026 19:04

Thank you for the replies everybody. I appreciate the thoughts. Really helpful.

I’d maybe ask Mumsnet to change the title of your thread to GoGundMe instead.

just giving is legitimate charity website, and is very popular and ( as far as I am aware) totally above board.

See, I probably would give to someone who needed to pay vet bills if I could verify they were genuine and not a scam because I love animals and it’s not the pet’s fault if their owner doesn’t have insurance.
