Aircon in primary school

Hi, my daughter came back home saying how hot it was in the classroom. The teacher did not allow fans and turned the lights off. As a result my daughter was hot and was unable to read because it was so dark. Does your school have aircon and do you believe it is a necessity? Thanks

I am only aware of one primary school that has AC, and its because its right next to Heathrow runways and too noisy to open the windows!

There are plenty of schools that have inadequate heating and cooling, and plenty of other workplaces too.

Hassell · 22/05/2026 17:30

Seems a daft waste of money for a the couple of weeks in a year when it really heats up.

And I very much doubt the classroom was dark!

Hatty65 · 22/05/2026 17:32

Schools can't afford glue sticks, never mind 'air con'.

Do you have air con at home? I don't know of anyone who does.

HTH.

MigGirl · 22/05/2026 17:34

No most schools don't, even a lot of newly built ones, as it's only needed for a few weeks a year. Fans are a perfectly adequate substitute in the UK.

Ohcrap082024 · 22/05/2026 17:36

There was a rather big discussion during Covid about the need to improve ventilation and air quality in classrooms. Remember all the talk about the need for an air filtration system during the bulk of the school year? It didn’t take off because there is no money for glue sticks let alone air filtration or air con.

😂🤣 state schools have no money. No money at all. Aircon would be really living the dream. Your daughter will survive.

😂😂😂😂😂😂

This has got to be one of the most rediculous things I've ever read on MN!

OriginalSkang · 22/05/2026 17:37

Do you mean the school has fans but the teacher wouldn't turn them on?

BotterMon · 22/05/2026 17:40

Don't be so bloody ridiculous! (unless you live in Africa/the Middle East etc.)

Octavia64 · 22/05/2026 17:42

I have never heard of any school having air con.

SnappyUmberLion · 22/05/2026 17:44

I don’t know any schools with air conditioning and it’s not a necessity.

Hassell · 22/05/2026 17:49

Is it half term next week op?

Tulipvase · 22/05/2026 17:54

Some people clearly don’t remember just how hot a south facing class room built in the 50s with large windows, (windows that won’t open on the 1st floor) can get. But no, we have no air con.

We absolutely could use it though. Clearly it’s not going to happen though. IT is a popular lesson during the summer months.

CrikeyMajikey · 22/05/2026 17:55

Oh poor baby girl. Kids have probably been sitting in the same classroom for years. Schools absolutely cannot afford air conditioning. Join the PTA and raise money for them.

PurpleThistle7 · 22/05/2026 17:56

There’s no air conditioning in any school or workplace I’ve ever experienced. It was 32 degrees in my office during the last heatwave. I’m in Scotland though so almost nothing has air conditioning.

Offherrockingchair · 22/05/2026 17:58

The world is only getting warmer and I think it’s a good idea. I know quite a few people who have aircon in their homes in the UK.

If we set a maximum temp that it’s safe
to work at, it will be brought in.

Ir was so dark ???

Does she go to night school or something??

shellyleppard · 22/05/2026 17:59

Never had air con in any school for myself or my children. Even when I lived in the middle east as a child we just went in early and finished early

Where are schools going to magic up money to install, run and maintain these?

Hassell · 22/05/2026 18:00

So you have air con in your house Op? In her bedroom?

youalright · 22/05/2026 18:01

Air-con can cause allsorts of health conditions and trigger asthma their not going to have it in schools

KatieKat88 · 22/05/2026 18:03

Both secondary schools I have worked in have had air con in some rooms - mostly on top floor where it gets boiling. There used to be windows that fully opened but that isn't allowed now so they barely help and my current classroom gets the sun all day. It is a godsend as it gets really hot if you're on third floor from around April to October so a decent chunk of the year! It is nowhere near as bad on lower floors and a lot of primaries are single/double story so fans must help.

JulietteHasAGun · 22/05/2026 18:05

Dark? Did they pull the blackout blinds down? It’s been sunny today so I dont see how I was dark. I don’t have air con at home and I’ve managed to read today ok.

Plenty of schools in the US, Canada, Australia etc have air conditioning, so that can’t be right.

HelloDolly80 · 22/05/2026 18:07

We are lucky enough to have air con at home and as a teacher, I have often got through long, hot weeks with classes who cant access their learning properly due to the heat. There is absolutely no money though, so even with our changing climate, its a no go for schools!
