Really cheap really filling snacks

If you had to provide snacks in a rented home for 4 days for 30 people and wanted them to be really inexpensive what would you choose?

Context: family rental for 4 days in October the cost covered by the invitees.

We have been allocated snacks for 4 days as our contribution and we are trying to disguise that we have a very very small budget. Financially we are really struggling. The exact brief was a 'snack basket for each room'

There are three main meals a day, but from seeing what people are planning for these some are really light. Yogurt and fruits for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. We are in charge of the snacks so expect people maybe hungry.

Looking for really cheap and filling snacks. We have more time than money so we can shop from multiple stores.

What sort of budget should we set aside and what would you recommend?

Why are posters on this forum obsessed with fucking veg sticks.

kkloo · 15/05/2026 20:22

Sorry if I missed it but how many snack baskets do you have to make out of £100?

NameChangeAgain48 · 15/05/2026 20:49

Go to Costco.

familyissues12345 · 15/05/2026 20:55

I would go down the traybake/cookies and fruit basket idea.

You could do traybakes pretty cheaply (start collecting betty Crocker kits now if it helps to spread the cost?)

I know I’d be really impressed if someone made something themselves, even if it meant we didn’t get loads of it !

ElizabethVonArnim · 15/05/2026 20:58

Surely this is the time for a big sack of Iceland frozen sausage rolls to shine? Cost pennies and taste gloriously of the 80s. Even snooty people eat loads of them.

TheLemonLemur · 15/05/2026 20:58

How many baskets do you need to make? I'd do few packs of biscuits, maybe sharing bags of popcorn and crisps, seasonal fruit then if you are a baker some tray bakes or tablet? You can make tablet really cheap put it in little bags to make it look fancier

MiddleAgedDread · 15/05/2026 21:00

Make popcorn, a bag of corn to pop costs a fraction of buying it ready made. Flapjacks are also pretty cheap to make and bananas are really filling.

lebin · 15/05/2026 21:09

I’d just go for easy long life things - crisps, biscuits etc. The benefit of this category is the shelf life. So if moneys tight keep and eye out for offers and buy little and often! If you could afford to allocate say £10 a month you could end up with a really decent amount for each room!

Gill81uk · 15/05/2026 21:09

Do you have a Company Shop near you? If so see if you fall into one of the categories allowed to shop there (or have a friend who does) You can get some really cheap snacks from there.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 15/05/2026 21:19

I’d stick to nuts, crisps, cake and chocolate. In September the big supermarkets will have chocolate on offer. Things like nuts you might be able to start buying now (Aldi ones are really nice and very reasonably priced). Large sharing bags of crisps and mini rolls can probably be bought a few months in advance too.

Gemstonebeach · 15/05/2026 21:23

I feel like you got the short end of the stick, snacks can be quite expensive and you have to supply four days wort! Can you ask to change the arrangements and everyone brings their own snacks and you get a couple of meals to cook?

@ArtShow I would love that but unfortunately most people eat quite unhealthy

I would make some cup cakes. I have a super easy recipe. Never fails - it uses vegetable oil and makes around 20 so make one and a half mix = 30. Also make some cookies - easy make.
You could buy some multipacks of mini cheese biscuits. Poundland for biscuits - they do some in packs for around a pound and they’re individually wrapped in packs of 2 in a larger pack. Also check out all their multipacks of chocolate bars, savouries and crisps etc. They also do packs of 10 individual hot chocolate drinks. Get it all in Poundland.
Good Luck and best wishes for a good time.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/05/2026 21:24

I think a few things:
a fruit basket with a package of biscuits, nuts, and some chocolate added (a bunch of bananas, 6 tangerines, 6 apples; a regular sized package of Oreos; a family size bar of chocolate, a tin of nuts) per room.
between now and October you surely can put money aside to do this task well.
but, really, if you cannot spare any money then don't go - it's not worth the stress if you're that skint.

JLMA · 15/05/2026 21:28

Right, hear me out

but custard creams from M&S are about 50p per pack, and really nice.

some of their other biscuits are similar, but some of their other naice treats are expensive. You might need to be prepared to shop around a bit OP to get some moneys worth.

A south or east Asian or Caribbean food shop will most likely have large packets of ordinary and also interesting snacks, or things you can divide into clear plastic bags with ribbons. They often have stock aimed at family and community events or small restaurants.

Peanut butter (for bread and toast)

My mum used to make what she called Queen Cakes, cupcakes but not in cases with raisins or currants in.

NotTheOrdinary · 15/05/2026 21:32

Don't be faffing about making cakes. Buy wrapped goods.

I’ve made lovely small cakes with lemon zest and juice in. They were delicious and everyone loved them. You can ice them and put lemon zest on too (I didn’t).

I would shop in Lidl, aldi or Iceland. You can make it all look more expensive through presentation if you have the time for it, transferring popcorn/crisps/dried fruit/nuts into clear bags with twisty ties for resealability and ribbon for prettiness. You could even add silly labels to make it look more deliberate and themed to extra disguise that it’s actually a cost saving thing if you want. Also if you do this then you can buy the bigger bags which work out cheaper and then split it down.

Cheap fruit - Apples, bananas, whatever is in season and on offer
Popcorn sharing bag
Cake bars
cereal bars
Fruit & Nut mix
Tortilla chips

If you can bake and have time then flapjacks are cheap, easy to make in bulk and filling, apple sponge traybake is the same and should last a few days.

Definitely Aldi or Lidl. You can get cheap dips, yummy crisps, biscuits, crackers all for a fraction of the cost of the big 4 supermarkets.

I’ve seen Cadburys pouches on sale for 97p in Sainsburys this week. That’s as low as I’ve seen them in a really long time. I’d stock up if it’s the same where you are.
