The en suite sink has been very slow draining and sometimes water has been sitting in sink until following day..I’ve tried vinegar and baking soda twice a few days ago, drain snake nothing unblocked it.
So this evening about 7pm dh decided to put sink unblocker into sink but he had to remove stagnant water that had been sitting there first then he poured the unblocker into sink and its still sitting there it hasn’t moved.
I’m really stressed about toxic gas so I’ve come downstairs to try and sleep on settee not happening! dh is mad thinks I’m overreacting as I left the en suite light on for the vent and opened the bedroom window a bit.. I was scared fumes would get into our bedroom ..so I’m worried the chemical will still be sitting in sink in morning what do I do obviously we can’t get it out

Fire!
Burn the house down.
Collect insurance.
Go buy a new build.
New pipes, no blockage.
Repeat as necessary.
Simples.
😉😁😁.

I assume all other sanitary ware is draining well?

AInightingale · 15/05/2026 20:45

Do you have young children/grandchildren by any chance OP? They are expert drain blockers. My son put pencils down the plughole of our bathroom sink when he was about 2. If it is something solid then the unblocking liquid won't help obv.

This Screwfix liquid gold. Two sinks (connected) upstairs blocked for 6 weeks, tried loads of different brands, friend recommended this and it shifted it with half an hour.

Me, too, which is how I know about it 🙄 OP said her DH was taking care of it.

Well he hasn't been successful so maybe she needs to take command.

Round here you can get plumbers to unblock stuff over the weekend. Given the amount of stress it’s causing, I would just pay the money.

Which brands have you tried? Have you tried the one that comes in the bigger box and has two bottles which you pour one after the other? I think it’s called HG something or other. You can use it even in standing water. I have to use this in my shower/wet room drain due to having (and apparently losing!) very long hair. It is ridiculously smelly so might be the one you’ve already tried, but if you haven’t tried it yet you’ll need to empty all old cleaner out totally first (from u bend into a bucket if need be) due to chemicals mixing. That stuff does wonders for hair etc. Otherwise it’s going to have to be a plumber unfortunately.

Christina Koch unblocked a toilet IN SPACE, I am sure you can unclog a sink with everything at your disposal! The power of MN is behind you, let's go!

Thanks for replying..the main bathroom sink taps were used a couple of times during this time 6.30-8am ..washing hands so wouldn’t of been running for that long.. what’s the logic behind this if you don’t mind me asking

Edited

Did you try running water elsewhere and seeing if this helped reduce the level of blocked water?

The logic behind this is similar to the siphonic flush used in American toilets.

Jesus stop adding more chemicals and people stop recommending more chemicals Confused

Just call a professional out at this point. And yes, warn them that 2 different types of unblocker have been used already.

Most drain unblockers are either very strong acid, which is better at dissolving grease, very strong alkali which is better at dissolving hair, and/or they are designed to cause a chemical reaction with water which creates heat, which will melt/burn through stuff. It's not a good idea to mix them at random because you can either end up creating too much heat and causing damage, causing expansion of gas which can split the pipe if it it can't escape, or you'll neutralise it meaning it's just a load of thick goop causing more blockage or you can create genuinely toxic fumes.

The very cheap ones are usually just bleach and are completely pointless.

They can all be pretty caustic though so you definitely don't want to get any in your eyes or mouth, or ideally on your skin at all.

Various videos like this on youtube. Obviously what's available in different places will vary.
