Squint surgery - DD won’t open eyes

My DD (5) had squint surgery yesterday and she won’t open her eyes at all. She did open them briefly when she came round from the anaesthetic but has refused to open them since. Discharged anyway yday evening as apparently this is normal initially, but I thought she’d wake up and open them today but no.

We are giving regular pain meds. I’ve asked her to open them to say hello to me and close them again but she absolutely refuses. I know she’s in pain and it’s uncomfortable but I thought that her natural desire to just look around would improve this morning. Obviously it’s almost impossible to put the drops in.

Had anyone been through this and got any tips?

When is her next check up? Assume they not seeing her this morning (that's the norm with the opthalmic surgeon I am familiar with).
I would give it 24 hours before worrying too much, then potentially call for advice but I am willing to bet she will open a touch by then.

Not for two weeks. If there’s no improvement by lunchtime I will definitely give them a call

I had squint surgery in the 1970’s as a 7 year old. It was very painful to open my eyes. My recollection was that it took about 2 weeks to recover. Go buy her a big teddy or something with fur that she can touch and feel and snuggle while she recovers. My parents bought me a huge pink baboon with long soft fur and it was a big comfort.

My DS had this when he was 2 and it was almost a week before he would open them. He learnt to move around our living room by touch. No one seemed to be concerned though. Eventually, I took him to my aunties house who he knew really well and was feeling his way around but they had put the Christmas tree where the chair usually was. As he touched the tree he opened his eyes in shock! Not advising you shock her, but after 24 hours, I would start to try and do normal things with her, I think we stayed at home on the sofa resting for too long.

My DD had squint surgery at 2 and we didn't experience this at all. I would definitely call them today even if just for reassurance and advice on what to do with the drops. My DD ended up with an infection and had to have antibiotics which we could tell because her eyes were so gunky.

To add, he had it done again at 5 and was fine with in a few hours that time.

Thanks everyone. She’s opened them a fraction to watch tv this morning. Phew!
