Always one spare of the following

Always one spare in the cupboard - this is not a panic buying thread - it's purely general interest.

I'll start - toothpaste, washing up liquid, tinned tomatoes, tomato puree and ground coffee. Oh also tinned tuna steak.

OP posts:

Teabags and soap.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 07/05/2026 09:55

Bubble bath.

SilkSilk · 07/05/2026 09:57

Gin, lemons, 00 flour, yeast, coffee beans, canned chickpeas and tomatoes.

Somesweetday · 07/05/2026 10:03

All of the above, apart from the gin.
I think it's something to do with my mental health but I have a real fear of running out of the things I use regularly.

I stress I"m not one of these antisocial people who panic buy and stockpile items when there is a shortage or rumour of shortage. I despise the selfishness of that. But I have back up spares of not only food and drink and toiletries but also skin care products , make up, and even a spare kettle and a spare electric tin opener, gardening tools etc etc. I realise it's not a healthy mindset.

My husband has to always have a spare of something before he will use it. So if we see a new chocolate bar we think he will fancy, we buy two, because if he only had one he won’t eat it.
I have had to limit him hoarding multiples of stuff but things he always had a few of are ;
syrup, oats, vanilla essence, protein powders, coffee, passata.

I don’t stock up on anything, if they stop doing the one I usually get I just try something else instead.

Is it like a real fear/panic feeling?

I absolutely hate running out of stuff and do everything I can to avoid it, but it’s more because it gives me the rage and interrupts my day. eg standing in the shower and there’s no conditioner left - would just about end me 🤣

ChipsyKing · 07/05/2026 10:24

Bread - I always have a loaf in the freezer. I can’t always keep up with my hungry teens.

shellyleppard · 07/05/2026 10:24

Toothpaste, soap, shampoo/conditioner. Food cupboard.... tinned tomatoes, tuna , soup, sweetcorn, tomato puree, bags of sugar. Just in case I feel like having a mad baking session

Thehorticulturalhussie · 07/05/2026 10:30

To be honest I can't immediately think of anything that I don't have at least one spare of. Apart from yeast but I buy it in 250g packs and it can go off relatively quickly.
I have 13 tins of tomatoes in the cupboard because I buy in bulk.

Belladog1 · 07/05/2026 10:34

Packs of toilet rolls. I have the open pack of 12 that I am using, and then I like a spare pack in the airing cupboard. I'm fussy with loo rolls and like the Andrex ones with puppies on ... so if they are on offer I will get a spare pack.

Coffee. Again, I am fussy and like Nescafe Gold Smooth powder, and I like to have a spare in the cupboard. I went to buy one in Tesco and I looked online at Morrisons and it was around £8.50 a jar - but on Amazon it was £6. Bargain.

I’m exactly the same. And, like you, I’m not the type to panic buy when there are rumours of shortages etc. I just feel ‘safe’ having the next box/tin/item to hand. There are a few things I have a ridiculous amount of, such as tinned tomatoes and tuna, but they do get used! I think it might be to do with where I was brought up compared to where I live now. When I was young, all the shops were on my doorstep, so I never had to worry about running out. Now the shops are a bit of a trek, so I think I probably panic a bit about what I’d do if I ran out of tomato purée. Because obviously it would be the end of the world🤣

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 07/05/2026 10:58

I stock up on absolutely everything. If I open a new moisturiser, I order another same day.

If - at point of death - I had to choose just one item, it would be Coffee.
Lidl was out of the strong French blend ground number 5 for weeks recently (Aldi equivalent is shite)

I now have a small suitcase full 😶‍🌫️

Highonmyownsupply · 07/05/2026 11:01

Bananas. We go through mountains of them. I buy them in various shades of ripeness.

FettchYeSandbagges · 07/05/2026 11:07

I don't really have any 'extra' spares other than what people would normally have in their food cupboards / pantry anyway. Sometimes I might buy two tins of something if it is on offer, but it isn't deliberate.

We always have loads of soaps as I have an irresistible desire to buy one whenever I'm in TK Maxx because they look so nice.😂

AreThereSomewhereIslands · 10/05/2026 12:37

Washing powder. I like always to have two spare 45-wash packets of Daz in reserve. This is in part because in the real world (hard water area) they only last for 25 wash-loads anyway; and also because only three shops in a three-mile radius of my house ever stock them, and one will always be sold out.

balzamico · 10/05/2026 14:24

Everything- our cellar looks like the corner shop (we do use Costco quite a lot)

IamSmarticus · 10/05/2026 14:34

Nothing really, if something is running out, I just buy another. I don't keep a spare or backup of anything, with the exception of maybe tinned tomatoes where I probably do have more than 1 tin.
