Nervous flyer, BA Cityflyer Embraer E190 to Mallorca?

Very specific I know, but wondering if anyone who is familiar with this aircraft (usually flies regional to/from London City Airport) would give their opinion on it being used for Scottish routes to Mallorca.

We’ve seen a great BA package ticking lots of boxes (other specific requirements all met) but the only thing putting me off is the smallish plane.

I really don’t enjoy the flights to and from London City in these as I’m quite a nervous flyer especially during turbulence and really feel as though you can feel everything, but tolerate them for convenience. Would just like some hopefully reassuring opinions on whether you’d do it!

Thank you.

A nervous flyer here and fly out of London city regularly probably on these type of planes. I trust Ba more than many as a high safety score but in reality you’re more likely to die on the motorway. I also use a site called turbil to predict turbulence so I am prepared. From city they are small and comfortable- pilots have to get extra training to fly out of city and that also reassures me. You are as safe on any plane as another but I find these planes where it’s a 2x2 set up nice and Ba give you a snack
! Ba stewardesses are also lovely if you pre warn them your nervous I just ask them to give me a smile if there’s turbulence etc. the other tip is use flight radar to track some flights and just see the normality of some of these routes. Good luck

Also typically do longer flights eg Barcelona etc from city so you’re route is similar

I’ve flown on these before, like them and haven’t had an issue, although I’m not a nervous flyer.

They’re smaller so you feel as is you can see the whole plane, that’s reassuring. I’ve not noticed any additional turbulence. It feels neat and efficient and personally I’d always prefer to have a BA pilot.

City Airport feels slick and efficient, I find smaller airports less stressful than big ones, less going on, less chance of nonsense.

(Re BA training, this is obviously nonsense and all pilots are obviously very skilled and well trained but something about it makes me feel that if something were to happen I’d have a better chance with a BA pilot)

I’ve been on that aircraft type a lot in Europe with other airlines, on 2 hour + flights. They are more comfortable generally than larger planes as extra seats couldn’t really be squashed in so seat sizes are decent. Sometimes I have felt more of the movement of travel - but even very (very) big planes will feel turbulence at times.

Yes, Embraer is a Brazilian company/manufacturer, it is also worth reassuring you that Embraer aircraft are among the safest in both commercial and military aviation. Check the statistics.
How often are they recalled or have safety issues or software faults compared to larger, more wellknown manufacturers?
As you noted, the E190 is a small aircraft, and like most small regional planes, you will feel the bumps. BA pilots are well trained, you will be okay.

I flew on an Embraer for the first time recently and it honestly doesn't feel any different to those typical European route planes with 3-3 seat configurations. The biggest factor that affects how much turbulence you feel is seat location, not plane model. The very back of a plane is always far more turbulent than the middle. Business class also tends to be bumpier than economy for the sole reason it's also further away from the wings. Sitting over the wings/engine is the most stable place on any plane.

If you sit over the wings on an Embraer, it will feel far more stable compared to the back rows of a much bigger jet like an Airbus. So just be sure to reserve seats and check in as early as allowed to make sure you get the boarding card.

I can’t comment on this particular flight, but you could have a look at the fear of flying Reddit (it helped me)

Sincere thanks to all of you for replying and in such detail! I already feel much reassured. I will check out the turbulence predictor app and the reddit threads. Thank you 🙏

And the previous flights via flight radar 👍 thank you.
