Is this quinsy?

DD16 has had a sore throat since Saturday. Went to GP this morning and was prescribed penicillin. She's had three doses. Next one due in 45 minutes.
She literally cannot eat and swallowing is agony despite a local anaesthetic spray.
She says she's feeling worse now than all weekend.
Is it quinsy?

Ouch!! No advice but that looks awful and very painful. Hope she recovers soon. Antibiotics might not have kicked in yet!

Iamacatslave · 05/05/2026 21:23

Could she try gargling with soluble aspirin.

FreshDoughDaily · 05/05/2026 21:25

Thank you. I did think similar about the antibiotics but the pain seems to be getting worse . It started from nowhere also with just a one sided sore throat.

Aspirin is a great shout. I'll see if we have some. The anaesthetic spray isn't making much difference.

Does her voice sound normal?

Quinsy often causes a "hot potato" voice - it sounds like you are talking through a mouthful of hot potato.

Can she swallow her own saliva?

Does she have a temp, or feel cool and clammy?

When I had quinsy, I actually lay down and thought that it would be easier to die, rather than carry on in the pain I was in.

Honestly, I would get her an urgent care appointment - her tonsils are very distended. I had to have mine lanced, and needed one of the mycin antibiotics.

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 05/05/2026 21:31

To add- whilst penicillin is the immediate go to antibiotic, I'm allergic, so had to have either clarithromycin or erythromycin. I needed a 14 day course, as well as a month of steroids.

Can she breathe properly when she lies on her back?

JudgingJudy · 05/05/2026 21:49

I think that is a quincy - i had one a year ago, They are a medical emergency. I would definitely be calling OOH doctor.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 05/05/2026 21:51

Looks like it to me.
She needs urgent care @FreshDoughDaily

TiredGardener · 05/05/2026 21:56

That could be tonsil stones - quinsy is just on one side I think. Definitely needs to be seen - Urgent Care for antibiotics !

bubblenance · 06/05/2026 06:01

How is she today? Did you take her to urgent care?

FreshDoughDaily · 06/05/2026 09:20

Thank you for all your replies.
So I phoned the Out Of Hours service overnight who took all the info and a GP did phone us back quite quickly to be fair. DD is autistic so I was dreading having to take her anywhere as it would be so distressing for her.
The GP said I hadn't given the antibiotics chance to work and to leave it between 24 and 48 hours before seeking any further assistance.
Apparently ibuprofen is the best analgesic for throat pain so advised me to go and get a big stock and of course to keep her hydrated.
DD is swallowing. She sobs every time she has to but she can. And she can breathe.
Thanks for all your help. I probably overreacted and panicked. I do appreciate you all taking the time to reply 😊

I had the most horrific sore throat just before Christmas, I honestly wanted to cry. The throat sprays/lozenges were useless so I tried gargling with hot salt water. I did this every hour over the course of a day and by the next morning it was so much better. The water does need to be really quite hot but obviously not enough to burn.

VividDeer · 06/05/2026 09:39

You have not over reacted at all and she absolutely can't take a ton of ibuprofen on an empty stomach.

How is your daughter feeling today?
