Ebay buyer claiming perfume is fake because they can’t smell it - how to proceed?

I sold an Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 perfume on Ebay. The buyer contacted me to say they can’t smell anything and asked to return. This is a common issue with Molecule 01, even addressed on the brand website. Some people can smell it, some can’t.

I told the buyer I don’t do returns unless the item is faulty. Now they are claiming they took it to a perfume shop and have been told it’s fake.

I have proof of purchase from a legitimate source.

What should I do? I have 100% 5 star feedback which I don’t want to lose and it would just really annoy me to refund when the buyer is clearly taking the pee.

Will Ebay side with the buyer if they claim it’s a fake? Any experience?

In my experience eBay don’t automatically side with the buyer. I would upload a photo of the receipt and tell the buyer that it is a genuine article.

i’d do the same and upload the receipt as the previous poster suggested.

id also attach a link to the website where it says it’s unique in each persons skin and may not smell much.

and say that buying perfume is a very individual thing and perhaps trying a new perfume should be done in person in a shop to see how it smells on her skin, as it will smell different on a friend’s skin etc.

that you dont usually take returns however if she has changed her mind you’d be happy to take it back at her expense seeing as how she can’t have had the opportunity to try it herself, as this is genuine perfume from xxx shop as confirmed by the attached receipt and definitely not a fake.

Thank you both. I have messaged my proof of purchase and am waiting to hear back from the buyer. I had already send a link to the brand website faqs. Thanks for your help.

I had someone buy this very perfume from me and complain it smelled of alcohol 🙄

Luckily thry dropped their claim when I explained what (most)perfume is made of.

Iso e super can smell different on different people, or not at all.
