He normally asks for money to buy clothes but he told me yesterday that he’d like a suprise for his bday which hasn’t given me much advance notice. What could I get him? We are hoping to do a weekend break in Copenhagen in the Autumn as I turn 50 then so don’t want to book a spa day, expensive day out now - has anyone got any bright ideas? He has bday money from his parents to buy clothes. He likes gardening… Probably need to be Amazon now 🙈 thanks in advance

Bottle of champagne, balloons, big cake!

Rose bush? I wouldn’t order that from Amazon though.

E-voucher is probably your best best at this point. Lots of experiences from cookery masterclasses to whiskey tasting to Ferrari driving days to tours of football stadiums.

pub lunch?

Do you normally do presents in the morning? 😬 My male relatives would have liked:

  1. Some sort of tree or plant, maybe one with a lovely scent. A sweet box, or a Daphne are lovely if you want winter flowering shrubs. An early flowering wisteria would flower around his birthday, same with a lilac, miniature if you don't have much space.
  2. Music. Preferably on vinyl.
  3. Booze. A good bottle of whisky. Tallisker's Port Ruighe is nice. Or a good bottle of port - a 20 year old tawny or a Colheita or a vintage ruby (but bear in mind the ruby will need drinking within a couple of days) or some really nice wine.
  4. Books. Putin's People was heavy going but enjoyed by multiple relatives. They also enjoyed command and control about nuclear missiles. James Caster's book of "scrapes" also went down well.

So I would suggest whatever of that you reckon he might vaguely fancy and you can either get from the garden centre/Waitrose/Amazon's fastest delivery!

Do you live near a garden centre with a decent shop?

My DH turned 50 recently and I have planned a year of dates - one a month. Some are bigger things like a weekend away, or a theatre show, others are small
things like a cinema trip or dinner out. There are a few which are still TBC. I printed 12 little cards - one each, with the month, the date and the event - and tied them up with a ribbon. I put it in a gift box with some of his favourite chocolates. It meant he had something to open, but I wasn’t coming up with a big gift on the day. It also means he has a whole year of things to look forward to. Some of it was planned very last minute - like I booked the theatre show 2 days before his birthday - and some things are still not booked - but we have a whole year to celebrate him.

Given the short notice, I'd be tempted to surprise him by not giving him anything. 😁

Thanks all, in the end I got solar lights and festoon lights for the garden as he loves being there. Really appreciate your contributions, may use some for his next bday ☺️
