I have got a £30 JL gift card to spend. Thought I’ll buy some perfume. It’s twice the price of buying it online at Superdrug or anywhere. Ditto candles and most other things I’ve looked at. No wonder they don’t make any money.

I’ve only ever used it for something I would normally buy that is the same price elsewhere, such as a Clinique item I use or a Neom product. Of course then there’s delivery 🙄
I think I used one to buy DC some apple earphones one time, they have a good guarantee as they were replaced foc at around 11 months, but I hate getting a JL gift card.
I don’t even live near a Waitrose, is that an option for you?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 21/04/2026 15:15

It’s my birthday and I’ve had the voucher for ages lol. I’ve actually ended up buying some fancy glass coffee cups with a bee on them for my little coffee machine although to get free delivery I needed to spend another £10 so me and my logic has ended up adding some £100 baggy black Levi’s jeans to it 🤣. Thank you though qt least I know it’s not just me who think things are expensive there. I only go in there to buy a yearly Christmas bauble with DD or when I’m buying a present for someone. Funnily enough my present today from DD was from there (Lego roses). Just thought I could’ve ordered a vase for them but I’m eyeing up on in Ikea!

What perfume are you looking at ? I used to work at John Lewis and tbh you’d be hard pushed to find one for £30 , they do price match though , so they wouldn’t be selling anything identical for double the price .
And no skin in the game for me as left years ago but they are making profit , they paid a bonus to their partners this year, first time since pre Covid !

HotLikePapaJohns · 21/04/2026 17:54

Spend it in Waitrose?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 21/04/2026 18:37

It was Marc Jacob’s daisy wild it was 48 in Superdrug and almost twice that in JL. Yes thy are making profit now. Which I’m pleased about as I don’t want to see it disappear. There’s a nice one near me. My friend works there and she gets six months off soon having worked there over 20 years

It’s on offer at Superdrug, down from £89, which is also what it is at Boots. It’s £85 at JL.

(Yes I checked, I’m bored waiting for a train and thought it would be unusual for somewhere to have it at half the price unless it was on offer.)

Shop A is ridiculously expensive because Shop B has same item on sale. Shops C to Z also sell at same price as Shop A but doesn't fit your agenda.

Bjorkdidit · 21/04/2026 19:06

But why would you buy it from anywhere except shop B in those circumstances?

For a lot of items, they will always be on offer somewhere so its just wasting money to buy without comparing prices.

A lot of the time, JL is very overpriced so you need to shop carefully or else you're throwing money away. For £30, I'd have just spent the money in Waitrose and bought the perfume in Superdrug.

Yes of course you’d buy it from Superdrug. But at full price it’s more expensive than JL, as is Boots. So OP’s main “John Lewis is outrageously more expensive than anywhere else” is nonsense.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 21/04/2026 19:13

John Lewis have really good sales I’d have looked at the website and bought clearance bits and bobs to stash for gifts if nothing else!

suburburban · 21/04/2026 19:50

I find JL very good and they do have a lot of sales

bugalugs45 · 21/04/2026 19:53

Annoyingly their price match promise is pretty shit these days as only match 25 retailers, boots is included but Superdrug isn’t .
Yes I had my long leave after 25 years service and left pretty soon afterwards , and I was definitely not the only one lol . Still have a fondness for the company though

Do they still pricematch? I thought since they dropped the "never knowingly undersold " they didn't do that now. Over 50 years ago I was buying a Silver Cross pushchair from JL and found they were being undersold by another local supplier, so they price matched for me!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/04/2026 08:42

John Lewis bed linen is excellent

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/04/2026 11:31

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroadsthat’s good to know. I love bed linen

They restarted it but with a lot of conditions , only match 25 retailers( physical shops, nothing online only ) you have to have bought the item already and report within 7 days so it’s a pain in arse truth told ,’as barely anything qualifies .
