Are you a headphone person ?

So it occurs to me that my DH and my DSis are obsessed with their AirPods. Both wear them the minute they have to walk anywhere, get public transport, or on their lunch at work etc .

i have AirPods but i very rarely use them, they’re at the bottom of my handbag. I use them usually if I need to make a call on my lunch and don’t want the whole staff room having to listen to it - but keeps my hands free for eating.

My DH and DSis say they simply cannot function without background music. I’m sitting on my lunch at work right now, completely alone and it’s completely silent, and I like it. I couldn’t tell you the last time I listened to music on my AirPods.

A few weeks ago I was driving my sister home from my house (1 hr) when she realised she’d left her AirPods at my house. I said I would return them to her as I’d already planned to be back at her house 3 days later. She literally made me stop at Tesco so she could buy cheap earphones - saying she couldn’t possibly go 3 days without earphones.

i was flabbergasted - but she and my DH think I’m the odd one!!

are you a headphone person??

I listen to audible books at night to send me off. I've also bought cheap earbuds when I've forgotten them. Also, I commute and trains can be noisy, headphones block out other people's noise.

ApolloandDaphne · 20/04/2026 13:46

I love them and listen to a lot of audiobooks. I have in ear ones, over ear ones and a Snoozeband.

No, I only wear headphones when I'm running. Which isn't all that often.

Both my adult kids wear headphones most of the time at home and it does annoy me as it's much harder to get their attention or just make casual conversation.

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · 20/04/2026 13:52

Yes love my headphones, i struggle to watch things otherwise as I cannot follow it properly!

Ahsheeit · 20/04/2026 13:57

Yes, of I'm out of the house and not always with music playing. They're active noise cancelling ones and reduce how loud the world is for me. I wear cans as buds are too uncomfortable for my freakishly small ear holes. At home, I just have the music on speaker if I'm doing something.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 20/04/2026 14:00

Yeah I always have headphones on if I’m out walking, running, at the gym, cooking dinner, doing housework.

I listen to a lot of podcasts.

Elbowpatch · 20/04/2026 14:00

No. If I am in company I sometimes wear one earphone if I am watching something on YouTube and don’t want to disturb others without isolating myself completely. If I am on my own I will wear two, or headphones.

I have to admit that I find it quite annoying to be in the in the company of people who insist on blocking off both ears. I have resorted to phoning them to get their attention at times.

Exactly the same, although I also use headphones at home after 9pm as I have a slight hearing impairment and don’t want to annoy the neighbours.

i definitely couldn’t go 3 days without them (or even a day if I need to be on public transport)

LittlePinkWeed · 20/04/2026 14:04

I don't even have any headphones, apart from the old wired in-ear type that existed before wireless. They're sitting in a drawer somewhere, unused for at least a decade.

Spaghettea · 20/04/2026 14:08

Yes. I hate silence. I don't want to hear my own thoughts. I always need background music or news.

If I'm working, tidying, shopping, running then I'll have my earbuds in with music or radio. Not loud, just enough to stop me dwelling on my own thoughts too much.
I fall asleep to radio 4 and have world service on at night.

Spaghettea · 20/04/2026 14:10

I don't sleep with earbuds, that's the radio.

ExquisitelyDressed · 20/04/2026 14:10

I probably use them for some of the time most days, for phonecalls to make them handsfree, while walking/gardening/housework/public transport. But not all the time every day. It is hugely annoying when I want to use them and realise I've left them at home, so I do tend to carry them everywhere in case, because once I've decided I want to listen to something I REALLY want to listen to it. All my family use theirs more than me. None of us really put music on any sort of speaker system at home, we all just uses earphones so as not to disturb anyone else. One of my DCs cannot function without background music (ADHD).

ocelot3 · 20/04/2026 14:13

I use them a lot in the house when I want to listen to the radio or audiobooks, so that my brain has some diversion while I’m doing boring household tasks/cleaning etc, walking from room to room and the garden, so I don’t miss out on interesting bits as soon as I leave the room.

Gardenquestion22 · 20/04/2026 14:28

Not all the time, I'll quite often listen to podcasts or the radio when I'm gardening and it's easier with headphones. I fall asleep with an ear bud in listening to the radio and have bought earbuds for that purpose when I've forgotten to bring them with me. I'd probably sleep better if I didn't...

But I don't on my 20/25 minute walk to work or if I'm walking into town or walking the dog...

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 20/04/2026 14:28

Yep, I'm a headphone person. If I'm out walking somewhere, or on my bike (I know, I know), or doing the hoovering. Other housework or cooking then spotify goes on the speakers instead.

It might be music, or it might be a podcast, but I've pretty much always got some kind of soundtrack going on unless I'm actively talking to someone, or reading, or working

SwimBikeRunBake · 20/04/2026 14:39

I use my headphones daily, they are Shokz bone conductor headphones I use when walking or running and around the house doing housework, and I am still able to hear everything around me.
