He was a singer in a band in his 20’s and now he taken up music again as a hobby. He’s not bad, his music is quite catchy and he’s had a couple of songs played on the radio. He posts some stuff on an Instagram account that I follow.
However, I’ve discovered a second instagram account and a TikTok account that seem to show a rebranded version of himself. He describes himself as a band with upcoming gigs and an album on the way. He’s posted some music videos he’s made of himself on his phone, in one of them he’s playing guitar at home in the front room with his sunglasses on ffs. He wants to be a rockstar, and it’s giving me the ick 🙁

What's wrong with him wanting to be a rockstar? How old is he now? Has he made the new social media accounts because he knows you aren't supportive?

He’s in his 50’s. He doesn’t seem to follow any actual people on his new account, it’s mainly music industry accounts. But yes he probably hasn’t shown me as he knows I’ll take the piss. I’m supportive of pretty much everything he does, but this just feels like a mid life crisis that makes me cringe a bit.

Bless his cotton socks. I can see why it's given you the ick though OP. If he was a lot younger YWBU but chances of him becoming a rock star on his 50's are pretty much nil

Exactly. He doesn’t seem to just enjoy making music for the sake of it, he wants to be performing on stage. He used to paint, and while he was good, that wasn’t enough for him. I encouraged him and put his paintings up in the house but that wasn’t enough, he used to go round art galleries trying to get them to sell them.
I cat really articulate why it irritates me. Probably because I’m perimenopausal and tired and don’t have time for my own hobbies. I’m happy to be told I’m being a cow.

Is he having a bit of a midlife crisis while acting/dressing like someone 20 years his junior?

It's worth mentioning that there are loads of channels from Spotify to SoundCloud for music creators of all ages but unless he puts in the footwork he won't get beyond local bars.

He dresses his age on the whole, it’s the persona in his videos that makes me think MLC. It reminds me of stuff teenagers post.

He hasn’t even got as far as local bars, honestly he’s probably not up to playing live yet as the music he puts out is all heavily edited. He has SoundCloud etc already.

I used to sing in bands when I was younger, and I got back into it when I was 49, and for me performing is a huge part of it, it's such a buzz to do live music for an audience.

You should be proud of him. My DH comes to pretty much all of my gigs and if he said it gave him the ick or laughed at me when I buy clothes to be my stage outfits I would probably boot him out to be honest. Why can't you just be supportive?

Fair enough. I’m generally very supportive of him and if he got to playing gigs I’d go to every one. It’s specifically the TikTok videos I’m posting about.

I don't have Tiktok but I post recordings on Facebook on our band page, I don't see the issue? That's what Tiktok is for.
