Do you believe that our deceased relatives

Do you believe that we will see them in the afterlife?

It’s something I’ve thought a lot about recently. Probably as I’m getting older and I miss them.

No, I don’t.

All of them? How far back would you like to go? You’re talking thousands and thousands of ancestors per person.

Or are we just talking parents/grandparents?

Edited

I'd love to meet some of my ancient ancestors. Show off to them about my free access to any spices I like, fine clothes and my bountiful pantry. They'll think I nailed life.

About a year after my mother died I watched a programme with Brian Cox explaining time, relativity and the universe. It made me realise our concept of time is very earth-bound and that there are other parallel perceptions of time. It's possible our ancestors have moved to another type of time that runs alongside ours. (Sorry I understood it at the time but obv not a physicist!)

To be honest, it would be very surprised if Brian Cox came to that conclusion-I thought he was very clear in his beliefs that there is no life beyond death in any sphere. Obviously I could have misunderstood him-he does say complicated things!

TalulahJP · 23/12/2025 18:25

for sure.

KateBushAgain · 23/12/2025 18:32

Yes

EconomyClassRockstar · 23/12/2025 18:35

My head says no. You die and that's it. My heart and imagination says yes. I get peace about thinking my Dad is up there somewhere with my Grandparents and all their friends, chatting away waiting for my Mum.

Nitgel · 23/12/2025 18:49

They live on through us. DH has definitely turned into his mother. 😆

KitsyWitsy · 23/12/2025 18:54

I don't think so. I'm open minded and even attend a spiritualist church now and again but I don't really believe. I am too scientific minded and realistic. I want to believe though, very much.

cantbearsed247 · 23/12/2025 18:57

Absolutely no way. Do you think rats relatives are there to meet them when they die? What about mosquitoes? We're the only animals who can't be happy enough with this life and are so entitled we think we should have an afterlife as well!

Around 117 billion humans have ever lived. If they're all milling around somewhere then you'd never find your relatives anyway! What on earth would they all be doing? Especially the ones that died 300,000 years ago - can you even imagine?

It's crazy to me that people think this could be true, if you think of the ramifications of every animal that's ever existed being in the after life then it is just ridiculous - I mean why does a human deserve an afterlife more than a Tyranosaurus rex? So are they there too? Or is it just for humans? Who would decide that apart from - entitled humans? And what about pet dogs, lots of people want to see their pets again - but why would a pet dog or cat be there and not lions and velociraptors?

We all just animals at the end of the day and we'll just rot away like all the other animals that have ever lived. We just have a much greater sense of entitlement!

I don’t know. I go back and forth on this.

Sometimes I feel life has been so difficult and exhausting that the idea of something else, rather than eternal sleep with a guarantee of no more hassle, is unappealing. I want to live a full life and see my DC grow to adulthood and have families of their own, but I’m not sure I want to ‘live forever’.

This is how I feel.

Forever and eternity is a very, very long time. I’m already exhausted from this life and the idea of passing away and then just going on to live a form of ‘life’ all over again, forever and forever and forever with absolutely no end to it just doesn’t sound appealing.

Plus, what would be the point of it? What is the point of us dying to then just become another ‘being’ again? (albeit in another form if that’s what people believe).

What is the point of things going on forever?

I believe that nothing lasts forever, including us.

But the wonder of life is that none of us will ever know until we reach that stage, and so until then I’m all for people believing in whatever brings them the most comfort.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/12/2025 19:56

No. I believe we’re born. We live. We die. That’s it.
a little tiny part of me hopes I’m wrong. Don’t think it is.

We once attended an Alpha course in our local church .
the afterlife / does heaven exist question came up . It was answered that yes our loved ones will be there but whilst we might acknowledge them , our being is there for God as he is the almighty and it is only him we are there for .
I was very taken aback at that and 15 years later still remember it .
The course did not lead me into attending church .

Poisonous rubbish. Amazes me how people can fall for this when someone is just making it up as they go along.

IMissTheLittleBluePackets · 23/12/2025 20:11

Yes, absolutely. I'm convinced that we go on afterwards in some capacity, and that we are able to rejoin with our families.

Nellieinthebarn · 28/12/2025 11:39

There are a few i really hope I don't see again, in this life and the next, but there are some I would like to see again, and hope I get that opportunity.

I am not sure what I believe, but humans seem to have such a fundamental instinct to believe in something after this life, it makes me feel (not think - no evidence at all) that this is not all there is.

Whether that is an afterlife, another dimension, or reincarnation, I don't know.

If there is something after, I tend to think that it isn't supernatural, but science we don't yet understand. Any way, we will all find out soon enough, what I really hope it isn't is eternal punishment, or standing around singing hymns in your nightie, which is my Sunday school picture of the afterlife!

SwanNecked · 28/12/2025 11:41

No.

plinkyplonk123 · 28/12/2025 12:40

No I think there’s nothing after death 🙃

Goddessoftheearth · 01/01/2026 19:17

I do believe yes. Years ago I was in a relationship with a man who died very suddenly from cancer - initially diagnosed with appendicitis, in fact the first round of chemo killed him he was so unwell.

About 24 hours after he’d died, I was at my parents feeding the family dogs (4 in total) as a way to keep busy. I was in the utility room alone and suddenly all 4 start this very low rumble of growling at were all all looking at the same place in the room. I still believe he’d come to say goodbye. It wasn’t scary or unpleasant though, and after about a minute the dogs stopped and behaved totally normally again. There was nothing outside that could have prompted this (they weren’t even looking outside) so yes, I believe.

Everygoodnameisgone · 18/01/2026 09:02

Yes, I totally believe this, I also believe in reincarnation. I believe our souls continue.
