Why do ghosts only come out at night?

Having a nice chilled afternoon and reading some old threads on this topic. I love a spooky tale! So I was just wondering why it is that when people report ghostly goings on like hearing footsteps in the house, why it is always at night? Or has anyone had any daytime ghostly encounters?

The ghost(s) I grew up with were there all the time, mot just during the night.

Newnamehiwhodis · 25/01/2025 17:59

I don’t think they do! I was working alone in the older part of our library one day, and I kept seeing a patron browsing among the stacks - we were the only people in there. Whenever I’d look up from my work and try to look directly at them, there was no one there.
when I would look back at my work I could see them out of the corner of my eyes- fairly clearly; a medium height person in dark blue clothing.

I wish I could have helped them find whatever book they’re looking for …

I've seen at least one ghost in solid form, a man I was passing on the stairs ran past me, I moved and said something like sorry, only when I came back down, my friend asked who I was talking to on the stairs. I wouldn't of known he was a ghost otherwise.

I once played with a girl in the park and there was only us two children there, my parents and a group of young adults without children, my mum thought it was odd she was completely on her own without parents, she was approx 6-7 years old, we were playing one minute and the next, she vanishes, we are all startled, no where seemingly she could gone without being seen. The creepy thing was she asked me if I'd heard about the car crash that killed a family.

Another one, may not be a ghost(s) but still strange, I once lived in a village, very small, and few shops, not much traffic, most lunchtimes I'd pop to the local shop, it was usually around the same time each day, I was fairly new and people were familiar and said hello on passing, but one lady I noticed used to stand on the side of the road beating dust out of a rug, like they did before hoovers were invented, she also wore a long grey old fashioned dress, we both would look at each other but she didn't smile and would carry on with what she's doing, also outside the local pub, a lady that I assumed worked there would often stand outside in black Edwardian dress, they were completely solid form and during the day, perhaps they were real but just something about it being in the middle of the day, no event going on, sparks the mystery.

They don’t , they are always around you , but more noticeable at night because it quiet and because there is more energy nit being used . Spirits use energy to manifest .

Azureshores · 01/05/2025 16:09

Because they are insomniacs?

Sorry! I don't know but it's a good question 👻

Topseyt123 · 01/05/2025 16:17

Daytime encounters do happen though I guess many of us are more sensitive to it at night, so notice it more.

My DD works as a housekeeper in a local hotel near us which is an old coaching inn. A few hundred years old in its oldest parts. When she's servicing the rooms some mornings there will be the sound of footsteps running along the corridor and doors opening and shutting, but nobody there when you look.

I knew someone who lived in a very old house that was part of a former abbey, he and numerous guests saw a nun sitting on a stone bench in a quiet part of the garden. It was at various different times of day, he said that all of them felt a sense of sorrow when they saw her.

My brother had a friend with an Elizabethan house, he and numerous visitors were woken early in the morning by a lady in period clothes sweeping the floor with a birch broom in one of the bedrooms.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 01/05/2025 17:47

I was walking home after a night shift and it was a bright morning and part of my walk home took me onto a dog walkers path. As I walked I could hear footsteps and a panting dog behind me getting closer. I stopped walking and stepped aside for them to pass and as I looked there was nobody there.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/08/2025 12:42

I haven’t, but as per my post on National Trust ghosts, a visitor once commented to staff how nice it was that they had people in authentic period costumes in the rooms.
They had nobody doing any such thing!

(It was at Ham House,)

Cravey · 17/08/2025 14:12

Ours have mostly been in the daytime, witnessed by several people, I’m still professing ignorance 😅

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/08/2025 14:19

Haven’t RTFT but it’s because of how your eyes work. Evolution, baby. Rods and cones in your eyes. Rods work well in low light and see without colour. They have a greater concentration at the periphery. So when you are a cavewoman, at night, an animal can’t sneak up. You’ll see a blurry, light shape in the corner of your eye. Cones are colour and do well in the day. They are concentrated in your primary focal point. So when at night you catch a glimpse of a —curtain— ghostly white shape in the corner of your eye and turn to look at it, it —isn’t picked up by your cones— disappears.

I was at my mum's friend's house, he mentioned that there were spooky things happening in their house and I was surprised because I didn't think he was the kind of person who would believe in such things.

But there certainly were odd occurrences there; you would go into the kitchen and the kettle would switch itself off - but nobody had switched it on. A door handle pushed down and the door opened, but there was nobody there touching it. We heard footsteps clear as day going across the ceiling from the room above, I said "Oh is that Joanne [his then wife]" and he said No, she'd already gone to work... their GD used to be chattering away and when they asked who she was talking to, she'd say that she was talking to the old lady. With the exception of the latter, all those things happened during the day while I, and other people, were there.

Our house when we were growing up was a bit disturbing at times, from the day we moved in I had unsettling dreams and nightmares - and I remember that first night, I dreamt that there was a couple walking down the road outside wearing outfits like the couple on the Quality Street tin (back in the 70s it featured a soldier and a lady that looked Victorian). It was only a dream but I had so many ghost dreams that I just hadn't had in our previous house and I remember it so well because of how unnerved it made me. We had plenty of unusual and unexplained occurrences there - it was a lovely house though, I adored it and hated to leave when we moved.

wildeflowers · 12/10/2025 17:10

We have a ghost that mimics our voices, almost always during the day. They like to call our names out in our voices so we get confused. Basically I’ll hear my child calling to me, so I go “What?” And then my child says, “No wasn’t me, it was the ghost again!” They do my voice too. They seem to only exist in one place in the hallway as the voice (and the feeling their presence) always comes from that spot. We’ve had other ghosts that only came at night and those seemed to be older men, while the daytime ghost seems to be a child needing attention.

Littletreefrog · 12/10/2025 17:11

I'm not sure I believe but the only encounter I have had that may have been ghostly was during the day on a ferry.

Lvpxl · 23/10/2025 16:47

The first time I ever saw anything I was 11 and it was the middle of the day, whilst on holiday in the Dominican Republic. I had nipped back to our room to grab some money and have a quick wee. I left the door to our room open as I was only going to be minutes. Whilst using the toilet, I heard the door slam shut. Weird but didn’t think much of it. When I went to leave the door was jammed from the inside something to do with the additional latch on it but for the life of me I couldn’t get it open. When I walked back from the corridor to the main room, there was an old man dressed in white linen shirt and trousers, with a white hat sat in the chair just looking at me. I was absolutely terrified. I ran and locked myself back in the bathroom. I must’ve been in there for over half an hour and then I just had this feeling of it was ok now. Opened the door and he was gone. Went back to try the door, still couldn’t get it open. So I had to go out the balcony door, luckily on the ground floor.

Told my mum about what had happened and the hotel sent maintenance to try get the door open. They had no idea how it had jammed the way it had. I didn’t mention the man until later on that night but told her that he wasn’t ‘real’. The fact that he got out of 1 door that was jammed and another door that was locked from the inside when I went to leave it.

I’ve had other experiences since and I become quite unwell after them.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 23/10/2025 16:50

My encounters have all taken place during the day.

surprisebaby12 · 23/10/2025 16:55

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 30/01/2026 14:12

Because that’s when there are shadows, it’s quiet so you hear strange noises and you’re more likely to have dreams.

ShodAndShadySenators · 30/01/2026 21:03

A friend of mine also had an encounter that he told me about, he'd kept it to himself because of people thinking you're weird thinking you've seen a ghost. My friend was out on a walk through some woods in a park in our area. He saw a woman walking towards him with a dog, and he stepped aside to let her go past. He said he's aware women might feel nervous because he's a chap on his own, so it's standard behaviour for him to give women plenty of room. But the weird thing was, she never went past him. He stepped forward again after a couple of seconds but she was nowhere in sight and the foliage around was not tall or dense enough to obscure her. She had not gone back the way she had come, he looked around and would have been able to see her. Very strange!

I don't think I've ever seen any ghost, but if they are realistically solid, you wouldn't know really. Most of my experiences have been heard or felt.

BasilParsley · 30/01/2026 21:08

I used to live in a house that had a resident ghost (and no, I'm not going to elaborate more on that because it would be outing!). But it made its presence known at all times of day.

I remember one morning when I was doing housework, it kept playing with something and moving it. I told it out loud "will you stop doing that please?".

It did...

I met my one and only ghost on a sunny spring morning in the garden. That was a surprise.

LoveMySituation · 05/02/2026 20:48

About ten years ago, I was a lodger. The landlady and her dog were away so I was alone. I had the radio on in the kitchen and was getting bedclothes out of the tumble dryer just down the hallway. Out of nowhere, the radio went off. Nothing else went off, and I was able to switch the radio back on immediately. Nothing was broken, no fuses blown. As far as I could tell, nothing had changed at all

Nothing else ever happened the rest of the time I was there, although I often felt watched when walking down the long corridors at night. I do have a vivid imagination as well! I had also just come from a Victorian house which had sudden perfume smells, and a feeling of being watched from a certain spot , but only at night,
