My Mother's Ring

My Mother died nearly 2 years ago. Very difficult relationship (I was CSA by family & she didn't protect me at ALL).
6m after she died her husband asked 'if I wanted any of her jewellery as he'd offered it to her sister but she'd said no'. My Mother had nothing but 1 small old ring with some teeny diamonds in so I 'chose' it. I've hardly worn it but on Sat I went out for the day with my Dd so I put it on. At one point we popped into local cinema to ask, on way out, about upcoming films. While there I used the loo. Back of door Ad showed 1 showing (tomorrow) of 1948 film that I suddenly remembered my Mother telling me she'd seen aged 8 & it scared her silly. Flushed loo, come out, washed hands. As I dried I saw a diamond had fallen out of ring. Gone.
It just seems odd that I never think of her, yet the second I did the ring (that she didn't leave me, she left me nothing & the 500k house will go to brother) is now missing a stone & damaged. Probably not remotely paranormal but I thought it odd.

Ooh that is spooky!

PoopingAllTheWay · 09/05/2024 03:06

I wouldnt personally be wearing the ring, i wouldnt of even taken it

Eggmoobean · 09/05/2024 03:30

Don’t wear it again. Sounds like no
good will come from it.

medianewbie · 09/05/2024 07:12

@PoopingAllTheWay well I regret it now certainly, but do you mean because it was so precious or because it's ill wished in some way?

I remember how she acquired it. We had absolutely NO money when I was a kid (think not enough to eat & plimsolls not shoes & no coat poor). She'd been to an auction (scruffy local not fine art) & bought a pair of old leather gloves. When she tried them on at home the ring was in the end of a glove finger. The story was that she told the auctioneers & they said to keep it (poss true as he was neighbour we knew well). Anyway later a Stone fell out (it's Victorian) & she 'couldn't afford to put it back so had a cubic zirconia put in'. After I was 'given' it I took it to the jewellers & all 5 stones were diamonds. She told a lot of stories.

Why?

medianewbie · 09/05/2024 20:44

Not sure if meant taken it 'out for the day' or accepted the offer of it?
Anyway it's at the jewellers now waiting on a quote for a replacement stone. Small but 'an old cut diamond might be expensive even so'. Argh.

OP they're just coincidences. Please wear it if you want to Flowers

Elphame · 10/05/2024 21:16

It’s very common for settings to wear and stones drop out. The jeweller needs to check the settings for you so no more stones fall out.

I would put this down to coincidence and an old ring. The stone could have come out at any time and as you say you rarely wear it, it was this time. If you hadn’t worn it, it would have been the next time.

SillyLemonZebra · 10/05/2024 21:19

I think it’s the universe telling you to take the ring off.

the scary movie, then the stone falling out. Those are signs to grab your attention.

How did you feel when you saw the poster for the film? Pay attention to that.

I would get rid of it if it were me.

bradpittsbathwater · 10/05/2024 21:22

I would throw it away if I were you.

Oh, what nonsense. 🙄

it's now at a local jewellers waiting to see what a replacement stone would cost
'not cheap sadly as it's an old cut diamond that is bigger than you'd think'
the cost will determine if I then get it fixed & wear it, bung it in a drawer, or - possibly - trade it in / have it re-made into something else.

@SillyLemonZebra - I'm happy to accept a range of views :)
Especially as it struck me at the time that it could be 'something' (due to the timing' or simply co-incidence / me being sensitised to the situation re Mother.

I will 'report back' re costs/ decision / anything else weird though x

It's worth getting a couple of quotes before you decide. Don't accept the first quote especially as it sounds like they are softening you up for a hefty bill!

LeilaLettuce · 25/05/2024 20:28

Why do you want the ring? I would sell it or throw it away. It belonged to someone you didn’t even like.

medianewbie · 26/05/2024 14:47

@LeilaLettuce because it's all I have left of her. It may have been a difficult relationship (inevitably as I was CSA) but she was still my Mother. You only get 1.
