Telling someone in a dream that you are in a dream

I have no idea what just happened.

I'm currently ill, so I went for a nap. I fell into quite a strange dream/sort of nightmare but no overly scary.

Anyway, I was standing there in this "dream" and turned to the right of me where a man was sitting on a sofa. I said "wow this is such a weird dream I am having" and this is where it gets weird.

The "man's" face suddenly changed, it was sort of blue and just looked odd and then I woke up suddenly and sort of gasped (?) I think that's the word.

I still feel a little "odd".

I'm guessing no one else here has experienced the same.

I used to have really scary dreams but i knew i was dreaming and i had to wake up to get out of it so i used to hold my breath in my dream to wake myself up...and id wake up

Thesharkradar · 29/03/2023 00:50

sounds like you're getting close to lucid dreaming😎

Findyourneutralspace · 29/03/2023 00:52

I’m sure there are many dreams I don’t remember but I also think some dreams linger. The worst seem to be when I’ve been poorly or get overheated.
Some are really convincing and I have to double check during the day that they weren’t real.
O have lucid dreams and occasional sleep paralysis. However, in your case I’d say the clue is : ‘I’ve been I’ll’. Any kind of lurgy sets me off.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 29/03/2023 00:52

You had something approaching a lucid dream. I have them frequently, usually right before I wake up.

isitaline97 · 29/03/2023 00:53

Sounds like a near lucid dream! Super interesting and can happen particularly during daytime naps where you quickly slip into REM sleep. Some people practice hard to achieve this state of dreaming, myself included 😅 It's a really interesting topic, there's lots of info online if you want to learn more :)

Glitteratitar · 29/03/2023 00:59

So I randomly clicked on this thread and had never heard of lucid dreams so googled it.

I regularly have lucid dreams. Maybe a few times a month. For as long as I can remember. I didn’t know it wasn’t that common until just now. I remember an ex was always amazed that I could control my dreams or wake up and go back to them if I wanted, but I thought he was just being odd, and have never discussed it with anyone else as didn’t think it was discussion worthy.

I actually feel a little blown away right now!

isitaline97 · 29/03/2023 01:06

@Glitteratitar that's awesome! Crazy you didn't know what it was until now. There's a lot of stuff online about it, but sounds like your already a natural! It's like another world, people who haven't experienced it just can't believe it's real 😂 Is there a certain time you get it most? I.e early mornings or after a midnight wee?

Thesharkradar · 29/03/2023 01:11

@Glitteratitar
lucky you😄
and all the others who can do it!

irreverent · 29/03/2023 01:19

You said you're ill, if you have a moderately high fever that could affect it, but it's entirely normal to have dreams like that. Be thankful (and also aware) that you didn't wake up paralysed. It's scary if you don't know it can happen, but if you wake up in a part of the sleep cycle you generally don't, you can wake up unable to move for about a minute. Only happened to me once and I'm very glad I was aware of the phenomenon before it happened to me.

dreamonlucid · 29/03/2023 01:22

It may stick with you for a while, I hope it wasn't too disturbing. If you keep processing and thinking about it you could try to go back and finish the dream, sounds like you maybe able too?

They do tend to become more vivid when you are sick.

Also that would be a whole world of exciting if you could harness the lucid dreaming.

I've been doing it my whole life without being aware, and then a friend of the family when I was in my 20s pointed out what I was able to do was not technically "normal" .

I go through phases in life of being really active and able to control dreams, and some phases where I have just normal dreams that are I think "normal" as I'm not controlling them.

But when I sick, the lucid dream state is so heightened.

Sorry I didn't realise I had reply's.

I've replied to this quote as I've actually had two cases of what I'm guessing is sleep paralysis since this dream.

I have never experienced it before and it's so scary.

It feels like I'm being held down and can't wake and it's almost as if I am screaming at myself that I need to wake.

My body feels really heavy with it.

After this I seem to get back to sleep easily enough as I feel exhausted after it.

It's all so odd.

@TheWristBoundLatexBitch
Yes that is most certainly sleep paralysis! I've had exactly as you described a number of times in my life. It's life your being held down, (in my case with hallucinations of scary demon etc), you cannot move, you can try to scream but it generally doesn't work. Best thing to do is begin by wiggling your toes and fingers if you can, or at least imagining you are. It usually helps to break the paralysis. It's terrifying but not actually anything to be afraid of, no harm can come to you.

On the other hand is there a reason this is happening? Are you still poorly or is their something in your life your anxious about?

The first time it happened to me was as a teenager, the first night I was left alone at home as my parents were away. Subsequently I seem to have it when on holiday or sleeping somewhere unfamiliar (although not every-time this happens) It can be linked to anxieties.

TheWristBoundLatexBitch · 30/03/2023 13:49

I have actually got quite a lot going on at the moment (all positive) but you are correct about me being anxious about it all.

I am starting a new job in the next few weeks, signing up for college and it's my driving test (second one) soon.

I think I'm worried a bit about how to manage the new job (odd hours) around my lessons leading up to my test, and actually passing this time so I can just concentrate on my new career.

As I say I'm very positive about it all but it's like everything is happening at once.

OP posts:
isitaline97 · 30/03/2023 14:27

@TheWristBoundLatexBitch that does sound like a lot to be taking on at once! I'm glad your feeling positive about it though, your subconscious tends to be a bit more realistic about your feelings and it's probably it's way of digesting all you have going on. You could try a bit of a relaxing bedtime routine without electronics if possible, maybe a nice warm bath before bed? If it's really causing you a problem you can always speak to a GP it's a well documented story phenomenon and there's things you can do about it. My guess would be once things have settled down a bit in your waking life and a routine is better set for you that it will most likely stop occurring 😊

Oh god this is exactly what I have. Sometimes it's a weight on top of me, sometimes it drags me from my bed by my feet, & flips me over but as if that's not bad enough most recently it sort of takes over my body. I can feel it under my skin and in my 'sleep' I can see my skin making huge ripples as it travels round my body. I tell myself ' it's not real it's not real' but can't speak or scream but the other night I managed a 'I know who you are!' And woke myself up!
Bloody terrified!
I have no idea who it was meant to be (I've experienced traumatic events but I've never been attacked or anything) but as I came out of my dream I told myself that's it! Now I've identified them and managed to speak I will not have this terrifying ordeal anymore.
I hope it's true.
My 'demon' is always male and he had very blue eyes and that's all I recollect.

isitaline97 · 30/03/2023 21:56

@HumourReplacementTherapy sounds terrifying! Mine always used to feature some sort of evil presence too, it strange isn't it what your subconscious can manifest! I hope you manage to get some good nights sleep too 🤞

Shoemadlady · 30/03/2023 22:12

Sounds like a dream but with a poorly high temp delirium

The first maybe, I had a migraine rather than being ill ill. But the two sleep paralysis's that followed I was fine. But as above I think it's just all the big changes happening. It's so odd though, you can see yourself and you know your trying hard to remove yourself from the dream, but you wake up in the same position you went to sleep in.

I'm not seeing a demon apart from the first dream where I saw the man who's face turned blue, I feel like I'm being dragged into something though.

It's important to know that it is a normal thing. Many many people experience it, and there's no danger in waking up like that, knowing that really helps. But as for the dreams, those are also normal. Remembering dreams, particularly many a night, is usually because you're not sleeping well. But dreams usually don't really mean anything, remembering them could be indicative of stress causing you poor sleep, recurring dreams are also a symptom of that. There are basically only a few types of dreams people have recurring though, and they're all based in worry and insecurities I think.

I used to do that when I was younger. I'd dream I was in a zombie apocalypse with my friends and quite enjoyed it up until things got too scary and I'd be able to decide to wake up.

Justintime1 · 21/08/2024 00:40

I had this dream i was being chased to get robbed when that dream ended i got in a different dream i saw my stepbrother in that new dream and i was telling him about that dream i had of being robbed while i was in a dream.
