What can you do about negative psychic experiences?

A close family member sometimes sees dark figures, flashes of a frightening demon-like face, hears whispers and sounds and most recently actually felt the bed being shaken when lying in it. It's understandably starting to bother him.

The person is question is under a consultant for a lifelong condition so gets regular health checks and there's nothing going on health-wise that might explain this.

He has asked me for advice but I don't know what to do because most of the experiences I've had have been neutral or positive. I don't believe in god (I don't think) but I definitely believe in spirit and that there's something after our mortal life, I've seen and experienced so much that there's no other explanation for.

So what do I suggest? Where do I even look to get answers here? I've bought him some protective stones which have at least made him feel a bit happier but I'm stuck now.

(Be kind please, if you don't believe in the afterlife just scroll on by, I'm asking for advice not looking for a debate.)

I wouldn’t assume psychic experiences TBH. Hearing voices and seeing things? How is their mental health in general?

Is this in reference to physical health?

The reason I ask, is that there are several mental health conditions that absolutely would explain what he is experiencing.

Surely, unless his condition is a psychiatric one, regular checkups for an ongoing chronic illness doesn’t preclude him developing a MH condition, or indeed a physical ailment that could include vivid hallucinations? I would be looking to medicine before ‘protective stones.’ It may be that his experiences are entirely explicable and fixable.

But the answer is very likely to be neurological in nature. So the advice will be to seek help from HCPs.

Maybe it's his medication
When I've had times of intense stress I've had a weird feeling when I'm between awake and asleep and it feels like the bed is moving .
Poor man , it must be really disturbing

AntiHop · 14/08/2021 19:09

Is this all happening in bed? It could be hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations, or sleep paralysis. I've had the sensation of being shaken with sleep paralysis.

deaexmachina · 14/08/2021 19:10

Not medicated and he had a full psycological assessment last year. Pretty sure it's not medical.

Never mind! I've obviously asked in the wrong place!

What kind of full psychological assessment? And why was that offered? Are we talking about psychometric testing? Or scans?

Sleep paralysis wouldn't show up a year earlier. Or at all probably.

Sleep paralysis can be really terrifying. There's a thread about it at the moment. I've had it and it's dreadful.

Pretty sure it's not medical

On balance of probabilities, I'd happily stake my life, and that of everyone I know, on the hunch that it's more likely to be medical than a phenomenon involving spirits, demons, or denizens of an afterlife.

I see things, which originally terrified me, but then the internet happened and I found out about hypnogogic and hypnopompic hallucinations (hallucinations that happen as you are going to sleep or waking up). Although it happens at other times too.

My children all have this, and one hears things too. Apparently there is no cure and it isn't counted as a mental illness. I refuse to be indoors in total darkness though! I have to have the hall light on for example.

Since finding out about this, I don't count any weird experience as being possibly paranormal unless someone is with me and experiences something too, because these things do look real!

So your family member is not necessarily being bothered by something unexplained, although it does sound terrifying.

Oh wow I have this! I didn't know there was a name for it. I just assumed it was a weird in between dreaming and waking. Very interesting.

And yes OP I'm another vote for medical reasoning. He needs to speak with his GP. It may just be a case of trialing a low dose of medication and seeing if it helps.

Mass in the house? Holy water? Prayers to St Michael?
