Repeatedly visiting (not real) places in my dreams

Hi, I'm interested in whether this happens to anyone else. There are several places that I dream about repeatedly, that either don't exist, or do exist in real life but are different in my dreams - but in my dreams they are always the same. They have the same type of permanence as real life places.
There are some friends (a couple) that I lost touch with. In real life they live in a normal terrace house. But whenever I dream about them, they live in a cave house in a forresty mountain. Another friend lives in different kind of cave house. There is a shop that I go to in my dreams, it's always in the same place, and looks the same (very boring and normal but doesn't exist in real life to my knowledge), and a place I used to live that if I dream about is always much bigger.

Does anyone else have this? The only explanation I can think of and that things/places take on a fairly solid form in my subconscious and my dreams are a visual representation of that.

I've dreamed about places as a young child that I wouldn't have visited or saw photos of as a young child - e.g. New York harbour where South Street seaport is - when I visited for the first time aged 17 it freaked me out as I felt as if I'd been there before and very comfortable there. Not all of New York just that area and maybe another part.

There are also certain parts of the area where I grew up and I'm certain I've never been there or only once that sometimes recur in my dreams.

The worst ever dreams I used to have (but used to be when I think I was either very imaginative or took recreational drugs but even way before that. I'd be on a boat/bridge and a plank of wood would be rotten and I'd fall through and drown. Also sort of pot holing through caves - felt very claustrophobic. The only connection at all to the boat/bridge plank of wood was when I was 10 and my best friend on holiday with me in Southern Ireland was running down a short wooden jetty, slipped through and dislocated her knee. But I don't really see that as traumatic because although freaky this was sorted.

With the ones in para above - I think it's almost like your mind is subconsciously warning you - take care, don't do drugs etc - I used to have them for a while and now, thank god they've gone away!

I have 3 different workplaces in my dreams and drive/fly/catch trains/ferries/buses to them most nights, always trying to find a short cut, but encountering delays and stuff going wrong with the transport.

One of the workplaces has a rope ladder to get inside, which would be a PITA in real life.

Yes! This happens to me too! I always dream I’m in my own little version of New York. Most nights though, I dream I’m on a train - sometimes it’s a whole story and other times, it’s just like a quick commute. I also visit my own dream version of London. Every time, the places look the same even though they’re not the same as the cities in real life.
