Ectopic heart beats/ heart skips

Hello All,

I have a bicornuate uterus and polycystic ovaries and was told I wouldn't be able to have children. Surprisingly I got pregnant at the age of 34 and went through pregnancy with no problems apart from my son being breech.

So I would like to say to those who are trying, never give up hope. God is Good

I developed ectopic heartbeats during pregnancy and they got worse to the end, my son is 2 and half years old now. I still have them every other day sometimes everyday. My GP says it's nothing to worry about but I had it so bad once and ended up in A&E. They have been so scary at times.

Has anyone gone through this and have you tried any remedies in making it better? Or have they just disappeared on their own?

Whyaint. I think this would get more replies if you moved it to chat or general health sections. I get extra beats (I thought they were missed beats but apparently they just felt like that and they were extra beats) when I’m very stressed. I’m also getting them now I’ve just stopped HRT. What did they say/do in A&E? Did you have an ecg, echo test? I had both because I also have high blood pressure and some other conditions but the conclusion was nothing sinister and was a result of stress. They feel awful though so I do sympathise.

@GreatBritishBachOff Thank you so much for your reply. I am very new to this app I'm still figuring out how to use it.
Oh yes I've hear of people getting extra beats. Has the HRT helped? I know you said you still get them.
I've had several ECG's done but they showed nothing, my GP said that I have ectopic beats. I've worn a monitor which also showed nothing.
I've never been diagnosed definitively as they said this could also be a symptom of anxiety and stress, I don't know how when I get them in the happiest of days.
I've seen people charge for breathing exercise that claim they can cure ectopics. I really feel like I am at a dead end with this, it's so frightening at times

My sister had something similar. It got so bad it was waking her up at night. Last year she had an operation called cardiac ablation, which has cured the problem completely. I'm not sure if her condition is what you have though, obviously. It might be worth asking for a cardiac referral.

WhyAintYouSmiling · 22/11/2020 17:38

@thenightsky thank you so much for sharing that sounds really scary but I'm glad your sister is better from it.
I have asked to be referred to the cardiologist but my GP said he would have to do monitoring before he would send me and still has not sent me :(
It's almost like I'm wasting my time by keep going to the GP

The HRT did. help but I’m off it now and they are back a bit especially when I have a hot flush. You’ve reminded me that I also had a 24 monitoring thing done and I think it was that that helped them work out that it wasn’t something that needed any treatment for. If you’ve not had this done and your GP said they would do it I would chase them up. It’s important to rule out anything more serious before they diagnose it as a stress/hormone based thing.

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/11/2020 17:51

I get that and have something called SVT.

I would ask to wear a heart monitor for a whole week- that’s how my condition was picked up

Aragog · 22/11/2020 18:27

Since having ablation for my SVT I have more ectopic beats.
My cardiologist said that these were fine and nothing to worry about generally.

OverTheRainbow88 · 22/11/2020 18:38

@Aragog

Same!!!

I think my ectopic beats used to then cause svt.

Whereas now they stop after the extra beat.

Do you mind me asking how long you took off school after your ablation?

Aragog · 22/11/2020 19:14

Only a week.

In hindsight it wasn't enough.

WhyAintYouSmiling · 23/11/2020 16:02

@GreatBritishBachOff thank you for sharing I will defo chase up my GP hopefully he will see that this is serious for me.
I just don't know how reliable these monitors are ? I can feel the skips and sometimes lightheaded after but nothing showed on the results. Weird

@OverTheRainbow88 thank you for sharing about your condition. I will ask about having the monitor for longer I wasn't aware that they give it for long periods of time as I only got given it by my own request otherwise this just got brushed off and not taken seriously

@Aragog that's what they say to me that they are harmless, mine varies from really mild skips to big thumps if that makes sense and of-course you think the worst like it's a start of a heart attack

I get them probably once every month or two. Each time it happens I think "is this the end". I don't think they're ever something you can used to as anything with the heart feels so scary.

AlternativePerspective · 23/11/2020 22:37

OP as well as ECG’s etc have you had a blood test to check your thyroid levels?

Over active thyroid is incredibly common after childbirth except in most cases it rectifies on its own, but not always. And these beats can be a symptom of an overactive thyroid.

There are a number of things which can cause them. I have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation so ectopics go with the teratory, but things like thyroid and hormone imbalances can also be a cause.

RaeCJ82 · 24/11/2020 13:53

Hi OP, I've been suffering with ectopic beats for the past 3 months. I've had several ECGs, a 24 hr tape, an echo and a whole set of blood tests. All came back completely normal apart from a small vit d deficiency. I'm awaiting an appointment for an event monitor which will I'll wear for longer and activate when I get symptoms.
I've been told by my GP that, although they can be alarming, they are not anything to be alarmed about. I've also spoken to a very well respected cardiologist who did not appear worried in the slightest.
Unfortunately, they've set off a horrible wave of anxiety that I'm fairly certain has just exacerbated the problem and along with dealing with fluid in my middle ears causing dizziness, had led to a couple of horrendous panic attacks.
I would push for an event monitor or longer holter monitor but I do think that they will end up being benign ectopics. If you're anything like me the problem will be getting your brain to accept that though.

Leftrightatthelights · 04/12/2020 23:22

Ectopic beats are totally normal. Nothing to do with having children or an abnormal shape uterus or god.

babypossum · 10/12/2020 21:58

I have ectopic heart beats that worsen if I have caffeine. I had an ecg over 48 hours and a scan which showed no abnormalities. My consultant told me it's very common and it could get worse around menopause, however it's nothing to worry about.
