was a bit grumpy earlier after totally uneventful hack, mentioned it to someone who said 'that is how most people like it'

is this actually true? or do other people feel a tiny bit cheated if they haven't had any near death experiences when riding out?

DD (9) enjoyed her first "boring hack" on her pony yesterday. Up until now it's been non-stop excitement as he reversed at speed into an Audi TT, charged up a bank to avoid a terrifying puddle and so on. She did get a bit of a gallop through a field so not 100% boring though!

I don't tend to have "boring" hacks because I can always use the time for schooling.

However, I can't stand "slow" hacks - and by that I don't mean I need to take every corner at 100 knots - but fgs STOP DAWDLING! Seriously, can't stand people who won't make their horse walk out.

I like it a bit boring at the minute as I'm getting to know our new horse, and I'm not the worlds bravest. I know what you mean about dawdling though, one reason we bought Nell is for her fantastic marching walk

No such thing as a boring hack round here. We live in a rat run next to a main commuter route. We have fast cars, huge lorries and tractors the size of oil rigs towing huge life threatening implements! It's horrid hacking here. The farm where we are now is lovely. Off road riding for miles. There is nothing better than strolling round the fields looking at the wildlife and the view. Dd and I like to make up rhyming songs as we plod. Sad yes, but we love it!

Well, it's something to aim for

Uneventful doesn't have to mean boring or steady - sometimes it's nice to be able to sit back, enjoy the scenery and a little bit of peace and quiet whilst blowing the cobwebs away!

PlanetEarth · 18/06/2010 21:47

When I was a teenager I liked it better when there was something eventful (pony rolling in stream, someone falling off, etc). Now I'm old, boring is fine!

MitchyInge · 20/06/2010 09:26

Wish my daughter would hack with me

I love blowing those cobwebs away or have something get the old adrenlin flowing. I'm with you MitchyInge I don't like boring hacks.

I don't meant blasting round all the time, but have an occassional blast or doing something unusual eg crossing a river, keeps it interesting for me and my horse.

MitchyInge · 10/07/2010 13:38

it was too hot for much excitement today, horse has three new paces just for hot hacks - amble aimlessly when I want a brisk walk, jog when I want a brisk walk, or flat out when I think it's time for a lovely steady canter!

I like exciting (or at least interesting) scenery but fairly predictable equine behaviour...fortunately thanks to a recent diagnosis of overactive reproductive system on my mare and a subsequent supply of Regumate the equine behaviour side of things is vastly improved!

tazzle · 23/07/2010 21:20

well I love hacks.... loooong ones but with some variation of paces, a little "work" / schooling and a little relaxing . Def NO to any death defying stuff... had far too many of them to feel cheated at all.

Far too old now for the unpredicable equines . I will keep my steddy neddy thanks

MrFibble · 08/08/2010 19:36

I am not sure what boring is but I'd quite like to give it a go one day... today we encountered a new zebra crossing that required lots of snorting, prancing, pawing at and then had to be crossed on tippy toe sideways at 8 trillion kilometres an hour.

Don't you love TBs?

horseyrider · 23/08/2010 19:50

I would love to have some "boring hacks!"

marge2 · 13/09/2010 12:52

Don;t like boring hacks if boring means done this route a millions times, it's lots of roadwork, and there are no canter tracks or logs to pop. I had my share of 'interesting' ones when my horse was a baby. i.e buggering off down a road at top speed, refusing to go past a goat, or that spot where the goat once was for the next six months in case it was back, whipping round and jumping into fields without being asked to. Had my fill of that to be honest. Luckily my mare matured and turned into a lovely well mannered safe hack who would go anywhere and past anything. She was safe but not a sloth. We hunted and did all kinds of exciting things. Yup we're both too old for 'exciting ' nowadays.
