my dd has asked for riding lessons and has asked me to go with her.

i really would love to learn to ride properly. i used to ride alot as a child but never had proper lessons, and its something i said was on my to do list!

so what could i expect to pay? could my dd and i learn together or do they split old codgers and kids up?

ta!

I pay £26 per hour for ds (Berkshire). It started out at £26 per half hour private lessons. That seems to be the norm around here - private lessons first and then you join a class. I ride already so I've no idea about mixed adult and child beginners. I suppose it depends how old your dd is - more likely if she is a teenager but pretty unlikely if she is 5 or so.

there is an old thread in here somewhere where lots of people compared lesson prices - it varied madly. will have a look and bump up for you.

we currently pay £35 an hour or £21.50 for half an hour, per person

the course I'm doing is cheaper than private or shared private lessons, works out at about £20 an hour but have to pay termly so is horrific amount when due

wow! its more expensive than driving lessons then...

my DD is 12. and im ooop north. in yorkshire.

it might not be, look at this thread for example

MitchyInge · 04/12/2009 00:03

have just remembered that the cost differs according to instructor - so a junior is much cheaper than the Big Chief

and if there is a suitable group lesson for you to join that will bring the cost down considerably too

We were in London earlier in the year and Hyde Park looked such a beautiful place to ride that I had a nosey online when I got back home. Look at the prices of lessons at Hyde Park Stables
I know they probably have massive overheads and also a captive market but even so, who on earth can afford that?

CMOTdibbler · 04/12/2009 21:50

We are in Worcestershire, and DS(3) is 10.00 for 15 minutes (but has an instructor and a leader on his own), and I pay 15.00 for 30 minutes on my own. We go at the same time, but are separate.

I'm in Yorkshire too. Lessons at DD's old stables was £18 for an hours group lesson. At her new stables -and a much better place it starts at £14 for an hours group lesson on a weekend. Private lessons £14 for half hour on a weekend and £13 during the week. the hour long private lessons are £18 on a week day and £20 on a weekend.

there are ways to get free lessons:

  1. get uncontrollable attack of the giggles, so instructor makes you get off the horse while she demonstrates - only to get giggles herself and have to get off
  2. volunteer as guinea pig for PTT sessions - people who are training to be BHSAIs need pretend students to teach for their assessments and things
  3. can't think of a third just yet

  1. Save the life of someone who turns out to be a top instructor, and offers you free lessons for life in gratitude.
