just realised haven't set up insurance for new pony yet - horse has quite basic cover (petplan equine) for veterinary fees and public liability but is not insured against loss of use, nor is the tack insured against theft or any sort of 'extras' at all

what sort of cover do you have/recommend?

have insured him with Barney until January anyway, but find the whole thing v confusing - too many options

tbh Mitchy I think loss of use is a really expensive option for the average horse. And it can be really hard to prove unless they are a top showjumper/dressage type who obviously can't do that anymore.

I'm with PetPlan as well but basic vets fees, theft, etc. Didn't bother with tack cover as I keep it in the house but also there are so many restrictions on the locks/dead locks that must be used, etc., so you'd need to check that your tack room complies with that.

Would recommend any rider cover though - especially if the horses are ridden by others and not just you and DD. If you are a member of BHS you get rider cover and Third Party as standard.

What do you have your vet fees covered up to? Our renewal came yesterday and we have vet fees up to £3000 but I'm now wondering if that's enough. Seems like a lot of money to me but my friend's horse narrowly missed having to have surgery for colic and she was told the bill would have been £5000.

We've not insured the tack either as we have to take it home each time, but we do have third party cover and personal injury.

vet fees up to £5k which would be bulk (if not all?) of colic surgery to my knowledge - it doesn't 'feel' enough, I know a dog who ran up over £7k of vet fees after being hit by a car . if they have to be hospitalised for any length of time it is terrifyingly £££

we do have any rider, as in the pony is insured not the rider, and we are insured for loss of use (which I thought I'd opted out of) but only for 60% of value

I want to have a proper look at it all when we come to renew in Jan
