One of those irritating 'guess' threads. Shouldn't take long though as there's not many of us in here.

Full livery Mon-Fri. All hay/bedding, full care of your horse, no hidden extras.
24hr on site grooms/staff.
Menage/lovely safe hacking
Heated washbox
Tuition available from resident professional showjumper.
Liveries' lounge - warm, comfortable, full cooking facilities and showers.

Go on then please guess - how much per week?

I would be very suspicious myself, just doesn't seem economically viable especially in current climate with bedding costs and feed costs going up all the time.

Perhaps they are employing people illegally for below minimum wage?

MitchyInge · 14/11/2009 09:41

it's not illegal to pay below minimum wage for working pupils/train to gain scheme though is it?

Owls · 14/11/2009 12:00

I know it does seem too good to be true doesn't it. DD1 home this weekend so feel we may have to go and have a discreet nosey round.

I would have a nosey too.
I pay £15 and that includes as much straw as I need, but I do it all myself.

Think steptoes yard though.
However farm owner will bring in/turn out for just a few pound so Ive heard.

Could be a tax thing? They are trying to make a loss for a few months?

Southwestwhippet · 15/11/2009 20:21

I doubt you could cover insurance costs for employing even working pupils/running a livery yard at that price though TBH... Most working pupils expect something back; opportunity to compete, regular lessons, putting through BHS exams, plus somewhere to live on site - even a ratty old caravan has some running costs.

Seems crazy , would love to go and have a nose round and see how they plan to achieve it. I love checking out other yards.

skihorse · 16/11/2009 08:19

I'm paying 195 euros a month... so ~170 quid? The only reason this is so cheap is that the stables/land have been in the family since the year dot hence no mortgage...

Turns out my old livery yard at ~400 a month is haemorraging money and they're trying to sell up. They've spunked about 2 million up the wall over the last 6 years and have nothing to show for it... mortgaged to the hilt and now have to sell.

Butkin · 16/11/2009 22:26

Last place we kept our connie on full livery was 185 pounds per week and racing stables near us charge 30 pounds a day!

30 pounds barely covers your weekly consumption of hay and straw before they offer anything else.

Pixel · 16/11/2009 23:03

Um, Owls? Where did you see this btw? If it was an ad I'm starting to think it could have had a mis-print...

Owls · 17/11/2009 09:51

No not mis-print, I know it's unbelievable isn't it.

Well I've done a bit of noseying around and on a very slow drive-by have to say it isn't as grand as the ad suggested. But it looks perfectly ok. Menage not huge, 14 stables apparently (could only see 6 from the lane) but they looked fine. Tidy yard, good quiet hacking. The Liveries' lounge is confusing us though - we think it might actually be a large mobile home!

Found out that the girl that's taken it over has only done so recently and she has a wealthy father ...... presumably could have something to do with it.

Well, from what I've seen/heard have to say if I was looking for full livery Mon-Fri I would certainly give it a go.

Think I've found the bargain of the year for livery yards!

mobile home sounds fab - we have a 'rest room' that leaks so badly you can't use the light when it rains, and there is no door, and it's about 4' square

there is also a portacabin that houses the loos and smells so badly of wee and mouldy tack you'd prefer to just bop in a stable

Pixel · 17/11/2009 17:06

We've just got the corrugated iron shed feed room. No electricity or anywhere to sit, but it's dry(ish), not too spidery and rat-free atm. I used to jump out of my skin when the squirrels ran across the roof but I'm used to them now!
