he's really upset about being temporarily housed next to a new horse - a stallion

new one is only going to be there a week but have never seen my boy so agitated and unhappy, he's always been prone to scraping the ground and kicking the door and so on - doesn't do well when stabled too close to other horses and has broken a few doors in his time

what can I do to help him a feel a bit more settled for the next few days until the stallion goes and his normal next door neighbour moves back in? (not that he likes him either but it's nothing like this bad)

was even wondering how he'd fare living out for a few days, maybe with an extra rug? he prefers that anyway but not sure if it is still a bit cold?

Oh box rest is a pain isn't it. Presumably you can walk him out in hand though if he's just being stabled to keep the wound clean?

Radio on definitely. Can you get one of those ball things with food inside? I'd save the wine and cigs for you as your need will be greater after a week of box rest.

Ah I have a brand new hat to return to tack shop, maybe can exchange it for some treat balls - not a lot of room to kick it around but I suppose it might take his mind off kicking the door for a few minutes (we leave the door open all day and just use the canvas strap things but he has learned how to pull it shut with his head for the express purpose of kicking it ). did install a mineral lick with enormous effort (who'd have thought they could be so HEAVY) last night and he is utterly disinterested in it

(but just like when the children have the sort of illness that means they have to be bundled up in a duvet on the sofa and are all sweet and cuddly I secretly like it when Barney needs extra TLC )

Can you hang a swede or big turnip up on a string from a beam? It needs to be able to swing about quite a lot so it takes a long time to eat but might take his attention away from the door (also, hook the door back so he can't slam it, doh!).
Dhorse did get some amusement from shoving ds's outgrown spacehopper about in the shelter. Little things for little minds!

MitchyInge · 05/12/2009 11:38

he is clever, he can unhook it - my evil furry genius not as clever as the one who opens his own door and then lets all the others out to play though

that is a really good idea, there are some massive sugar beets around at the moment too - hopefully he won't pull the whole roof down with it though!

If he does pull the roof down...I'm really glad you don't know where I live.

has it been a week yet?
